Update on sibling boys - potty training struggles over?

Okay, Sheltie folk, first of all I want to thank you for the responses to my last post where I told you about my sibling boys - where one is potty trained to go out and the other was just not getting it. We had one pee pad left in the house because he would wander over and pee on it, even though we were going outside and he'd do #1 and #2 outside when we went. Little Bryan will ask to go out and had not made a mistake inside in months. Big Larry wouldn't ask. Not even give a hint. He'd just walk to the pad and pee if he happened to be in the kitchen alone. He would do #2 in the yard when taken out but not on walks. Then one day on our walk he did #2. I swear I hear a chorus of angels "aaaahh!" Hahahaha. Since that walk he poops only outside in the yard or outside.

So we decided that this was it....up goes the pee pad. We started taking them out hourly just to reinforce 'outside', but realized that he seems to really get it now.

It has been a week. He has held it until we go out into the yard or go on a walk. He did ask once or twice but he sucks at asking. He defers to little Bryan, who's the bossy one of the two. He has even held it for 4hrs one day when I was busy and took them out later than I had hoped.

I am SO proud of him! I still don't trust him when he wanders into the kitchen alone so I say "whatcha doing, Larry?" and he trots back in or I see he's laying on the floor or snuffing around the kitchen counter for a rogue steak sandwich (he says "you never know! It can happen!) LOL

Now comes the big test.....can I let them go up to the 2nd floor (bedrooms and my office) without him piddling up there? Today is the day we find out.

Good job on getting him to go outside!
Be careful not to give him too many freedoms too soon...if my boy backslid I'd remove freedoms for a good month! Now that you've had them neutered it may be easier as you've managed to avoid the marking. My last one Riley didn't mark on walks at all...we could go for a 3 mile walk and he'd pee at the very end (he was neutered quite young) while Piper would be peeing every 10 feet!

I don't give my dogs extra freedoms until we get thru the adolescent potty regression, learnt that the hard way (when my pillow got peed on). But you're probably talking about supervised time.
Definitely supervised time. Both my husband and I work from home and one of us is almost always with them. They get the livingroom and kitchen (and upstairs in my office today) - but we've decided they will never go into the bedroom. They love their sleeping pen in the kitchen so we'll keep that.

That's what I'm hoping for. I know Larry did mark upstairs once when we let them upstairs and that was it - closed off! We had the carpet cleaned and doggie de-scented, they've been fixed for a while now, and we're giving it a go. Bryan definitely marks his territory outside on walks and Larry is starting to. It's a work in progress and my fingers are crossed it continues to go well. I've been working in the kitchen on my laptop for months when my office has my comfy desk etc upstairs. I want to work back in my office again! LOL
