Davina and I trialed at an all-breed obedience trial this past weekend. We entered the Utility world and made our debut in the A class.
To say I was calm, cool and collective would truly be an overstatement. On our first exercise I bobbled and we lost a point or two. Not the greatest way to make an entrance, but we recovered and progressed through the exercises quite well. Davina was brisk and happy performing the exercises, even the articles. Fortunately I had practiced them right before going into the ring knowing that my scent would be different as now it had the "I'm a nervous wreck" scent on them. Davina did her go outs beautifully. In fact she was headed directly to the stanchion but then took 3 or 4 steps to a different stanchion and then rerouted herself back on the path to the correct stanchion. For rerouting herself I let her touch the stanchion and take whatever amount of points the judge wanted to take.
We scored a 193.5 with a first place rosette.
The second day wasn't so pretty. Davina felt every ounce of stress in me even though there was no leash involved. She was not happy or brisk. During the moving stand, she opted to perform a bow and stretch right after the judge had performed the exam. I thought for sure we were goners, but Davina never moved her feet and the judge continued and gave me the command to call my dog. Davina perked up and finished quite nicely. We scored a 188.5 and took a third place rosette.
Not all that bad for our first entries into the Utility ring.
