Vacation

I will be picking up a new sheltie puppy at the end of May (8 weeks old). Unfortunately, I will also be going on vacation the last week of June. I'm worried about training, bonding, and puppy sitting. I never kenneled my previous dog as I have a large extended family and always had someone stay at my house, as well as wonderful neighbors who would take care of her.

My dilemma here is that I'll be leaving my 3 month old baby for a week and am worried I will miss important bonding time. Also, I have to either find someone to stay here or take her somewhere (been checking out dogvacay.com) because this time my entire family is going on this trip. Because puppies require alot of time to devote to going outside for potty training, I don't want to put that burden on my neighbors, both of whom work all day.

Anyone have any advice or have had a similar situation?

Hi DarcyDog, I had this same situation several years ago and what I was able to work out was to leave the puppy with the breeder while I was on vacation. That's a win-win all the way around, I knew my puppy was safe and well cared for and puppy gets another week with mom, biggest benefit of all. I did as you did and called the dayvacay spots and then offered the breeder the fee I would have paid for boarding. She made a few bucks and we were all happy, no stress, see . . . win-win. Hope this helps and we will be looking forward to pictures of the new furbaby.

Thank you all so much. Unfortunately, I live in Pittsburgh, and my breeder is 2 hours away in Ohio. I have asked her if she would watch her for the week and she is happy to take her for the week, but I was trying to explore an option where I wouldn't have to make the 2 hour drive to Ohio as I will have a 6 hour drive to get to my vacation destination.

Trust me, if I don't have another viable option, I will make the drive to Ohio as puppy's care is the most important thing for me. :smile2:

met a breeder from the Pittsburgh area and another breeder who was a friend of hers from Ohio at the Sheltie Nationals in Florida. maybe your breeder has a friend in the Pittsburgh area who would be willing to watch the puppy for a boarding fee................
