WARNING: ProMeris Flea/Tick Control

I don't know if anyone here has received the emails about the terrible side effects suffered by dogs and people from ProMeris, a new flea/tick preventative distributed through vets, but better safe than sorry. I researched this online and in addition to the account I received from a breeder who, along with her six dogs became VERY sick (to the tune of $2500 in vet bills) there are a number of other accounts on forums and in discussion groups of similar incidents with this product. I also checked Snopes which does not dispute the stories. One writer also tried to call the company for information and was told her dog must have ingested the stuff to become so sick. Has anyone ever seen a dog who can lick between his shoulder blades??

We have a terrible tick problem here in Connecticut and as much as I hate it, I am forced to use Frontline and Advantix on my dogs. Two of my previous Shelties and two of my horses have had Lyme disease. This year is the worst I have seen--the preventative is working on the dogs, but they are dropping deer ticks in the house.

The best course I think is to talk with your vet, but I would steer clear of this product until these questions are answered! :uhoh:

Thanks Ann !!

I had not heard of this product. Thanks for the very important info. To help with the flea and tick problem I treat my yard with an insectacide just prior to or during a rain storm. This drives it into the soil and does help with the fleas and ticks. It sevin, it's a big red bag. I do half of the yard at a time. And the dogs are kept off the area being treated until after the rain has washed it all in. I have had great luck with this product. But it must be used carefully.:eek2: It is toxic until after it has been absorbed into the ground. :dead: It kills fleas and ticks that are presently there and their eggs. I am highly allergic to flea bites so I must be very careful about these little annoying pests. Did you ever wonder why certain critters were made ??:rolleyes2:

All the time!

I have heard several horror stories about ProMeris myself. Mostly about severe allergic reactions in dogs and in humans. This stuff has to be the worst I've ever heard of. I do use Frontline Plus and I also have my yard treated with Seven liquid every month. So far we have been able to keep all of those ugly critters at bay... and Florida is rampant with fleas and ticks...

Odd

Yesterday at the dog park we were having the same discussion about ProMeris. One of the "moms" works for a vet's office so a Golden's mom who had just used it that day asked her opinion. Our resident vet tech told us all to stay far away from it for the same reasons listed. Her vet won't carry it because it's so bad (good vet :smile2:). The Golden looked like she felt horrible and you could still see the oil slick on the back of her neck, even though it was about 6 last night and the medicine had been applied that morning. I'm glad that when I checked the boards today someone else had put up the warning.
