Weaves

24 inch weaves are safer for dogs their shoulders, hips and ribs. The smaller dogs learn to adjust their strides.

What sized dogs? I'm sure "24 inch weaves are safer for dogs" doesn't mean every single dog that competes. I'm sure it means for a specific size.....or maybe a range.

Any way you look at it, over all sizes, a bigger opening between poles requires less contortion of the body to get throu them. It creates less stress. Even my smallest 12" dog, standing right at 13", weaves much better in them.
I have a friend who's older dog they believe has spondilosis, thanks to weaving. He only ever did 20". Perhaps the more generous 24" weave poles wouldn't have been so hard on his body.

Oh not disagreeing that larger weave pole entries are better. Ember certainly does them better. I just think the stress that weaving creates on dogs in general is crazy, even more so for the big dogs especially at the speeds people push them for and the height to distance ratio. JMO.

I never thought about that. I wonder if it helps with the little dogs, i mean, I saw a lot of crashes when they first changed them over. Instead of doing a hop, many had to start taking extra steps. Although that may be easier on the body, obviously they needed to rework it.

USDAA's rules and regulations say that weaves should be 22", give or take 2" either way. So technically they could be anywhere between 20 and 24".

I agree that it's silly since the majority of clubs use 24", but they are within the guidelines to use smaller spacing.

If you think about it, the people who are demanding that 24" weaves be used are really asking that the host club operate at the extreme allowed. By using 22" in weaves the host club is complying with the standard. And, all the clubs that run USDAA trials on 24" weaves exclusively are deviating from the exact standard. An allowed deviation, but still a deviation.

We aren't competing at Nationals, but if we were this wouldn't concern me. We regularly practice on weaves with spacing from 21" to 24". Phebe adjusts. She loves her weaves.

I see all the controversy about the CynoSports games using 22" spacing, but while I understand the concerns of those voicing their concern, CynoSports hasn't ever used 24" spacing in the past so claiming that USDAA is responsible for causing them all this trouble for their dogs is a bit off.
Just as last year when the pole spacing was 22" so it is planned for this year... shouldnt come as a surprise to anyone.

Granted very large dogs need space, but for many shelties, they are faster with the 22" spacing since 24" requires the smaller dogs to reach further for every pole.

I have no argument against the assertion that 24" is safer, well so is 26" and 28" for that matter, but USDAA rules clearly states 22" with up to 2" variance allowed. A bit of a storm in a teacup, really, considering that other equipment might not be identical to what the dogs have bee accustomed to, such as surfaces, pivot point, dw bounce or the width of the jumps. The response on those has always been "it's a training issue".
I train my dogs on 21", 22", & 24". I stopped doing 18" a few years back.

USDAA has come under several rounds of calls for changing this spec or that spec. to meet the perceived needs of individuals dogs & if all such things were acted upon by all venues there would be little to differentiate them & we'd not be competitive in international venues.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm not sure...but the weaves that we have at home might even be 22". If they're not, I'm not sure who around here has them, but my dogs have trained on a lot of different spacings and designs.
