Has anyone else had difficulty getting dogs to lose weight while on prednisone/Temaril-P?
I’ve found a number of threads about Prednisone as treatment and the heavy urination side effect but right now I’m concerned about weight gain (thankfully the only side-effect Olive has had.)
Olive is on a half tablet of Temaril-P once a day for her severe environmental (probably dust mite and pollen) allergies, and put on several pounds since starting it in November. We cut her food (Acana Grasslands, Ranchlands, Pacifica on a rotating basis) down to 2/3 cup a day with green beans to fill out her meals in late April/early May and she gets a couple of 1.5-3.2 run/walks a week. Despite this, she hasn’t lost a pound since her annual exam in June.
We’ve tried supplementing Vibrant Pets Ultimate Athlete but it just confirmed our suspicion that she is allergic to poultry (there’s poultry liver in it and she started obsessive licking/chewing after we worked up to a full dose.) She was originally on Benadryl last fall but as we upped it to a dose that would have an effect on her allergies, she became too lethargic. We can’t cut her food down more as her stomach empties too fast and she throws up bile (I think I had a thread or two on this last year, we stopped that by going to 4 meals a day, tried substituting her last meal for just green beans and that digests too fast.) Our vet likes Acana and supports keeping her on a high quality food but is open to a lower calorie but still high quality food (problem is Olive is allergic/sensitive to wheat, rice, and poultry.)
Any ideas for possible solutions we’ve missed?
