Weight loss hungry dog

Simba has been put on a bit of a diet by our vet. I have been struggling to control his weight. He was 13.6kg and now down to 13.1kg but his recommended weight is 12kg. He has been eating about 170g of food a day split into 2 meals but we have had to cut back to 100g. He gets treats on a Thursday at training and a few tidbits at agility at the weekend. He used to get treats everyday!
My problem now though is that he is always hungry. He has been eating poo out the back. I've been trying to pick it up straight away but with 5 dogs I don't always catch them going! He has been leaping on people at the class to try and take their treats. He eats a special gastrointestinal friendly food and any change in his food causes him to be sick :( Has anyone any suggestions on what I could give him to make him feel fuller?

Have you tried adding veggies? When we put our guys on a diet we supplement with frozen (unsalted) green beans. Low in calories but helps to fill them up.

I used to have a diabetic dog, so I was always searching for low calorie treats. He used to love green beans and asparagus (how crazy is it that he loved asparagus)!!!!!!

Also, cutting down from 170 grams to 100 grams is a huge drop. What about compromising on, say, 125 grams per day and see how he does with that? You can also increase his exercise.

Buy a bag of frozen green beans and add a handful to your dog's bowl at each feeding. You don't even have to thaw them; I feed them right out of the bag. I mix a bit of warm water in ... the water helps them to feel more full. Green beans don't add calories and are good for them. My vet recommends it for dogs on diets.

For treats, I use baby carrots. Mine love them just as much as dog biscuits.

Thank you for all the great replies. I will definitely try green beans! He loves carrots so I'll add them in also.

My dogs get all sorts of vegetables, whatever is in season. I have to keep my dogs' weight low because of arthritis and bulking with veg is the best way to do this. Cauliflower, pumpkin and zucchini seem to be their faves. I actually cook up several days worth of veggies and keep them in the fridge, otherwise I just cook up some frozen ones, usually the broccoli, cauliflower and carrot (mine won't eat them frozen or uncooked and they hate beans). Whatever veggies you get, better to get ones they can chew on, not the diced size as they don't break down the small pieces of things like carrot peas and corn and it tend to go straight through. Even though that's good for weight, if you are feeding vegetables they may as well get the extra nutrients they provide.

My baby always loved green peppers and jarred mushrooms mixed with some carrots and some chicken chunks, just boil a piece of chicken, this was her own salad a couple of nights a week. Getting all of that "people" food made her think she was really something special, but of course she was. :smile2: :fl
