what to do when whining?

ahh the whine...I myself have a squeaker here. Its half whine/squeak. It really is cute and you can predict when he will do it...it was mostly my mom who created this monster. He was the tiny one in the litter, tube fed for almost 3 weeks pretty much around the clock, used to being held and catered to, so what ever you are doing when he wants you to pay attention to him he will come up next to you and squeak. He will do it like clock work at dinner time, as soon as I finish eating he will start low at first and than louder until you address him. When he comes in the room if you dont look at him he'll walk up beside you and squeak, just to let you know he's there. So generally hes not a good somethings amiss alarm system! ;) Noah is probably the best one here for that. If someone at night has to go out or if something is wrong he will bark to alert you.
 
Cosmo & Rockey will rarely Whine at you If somethings wrong, they usually come stand right infront of you bounce on there front paws and bark like crazy, LIke saying hey stupid Here listen to me Dummy, Or if you are sleeping then they jump on your head, if they are doing this you had better get up , or go check it out cause something is not right somewhere in the house.
 
What do you mean by a whining sound? Is it a kind of a whimper? My Tully whimpers when she needs to go to the toilet and if I lock either of mine out by mistake they will make a little whimper sound to get my attention Mine have a range of reasons why they whimper and i would rather they whimper than bark to get my attention, it seems more polite to me and the way they do it is kind of polite.

Being a pup though your sheltie may just be trying out a range of vocalisations. Whimpering is generally not a common sound for a dog to make so I wouldnt ignore it unless it starts getting too annoying, plus it beats barking hands down.
 
Lucky whines to go out once in awhile. Lady, the Drama Queen is a different story. If she doesn't get her way, she whines, stomps her feet, and throws her body down, thump.

Last night a family member had her seat, and she was totally disgusted. My husband laughed all day today thinking how she acted. Its time for me to go to lay down, they are in my spot, now where do I go.

I swear she can tell time, at 10:00 PM everyone has to clear out. If she wants in our bed, she will stand there and stare at me, get up, its time.
 
I think it's attention and hunry. This is based on observation from the past few days. Very interesting to learn!
 
For now, I noticed Lucien has mainly two whines: if it's a mix of whining and something that sounds like a howl, he needs to go outside. However, if it's only high pitched whining, he is just demanding attention.

In the first case I always go to him, whereas for the "LOOK AT ME I'M CUTE!!!" whine I ignore him. I sometimes go and take him out to play after he has been calm for a few minutes, while others I let him be. I guess it's my way of saying that whining when nothing is wrong will get him nowhere.
