When does the fluff come?

By fluff I mean the undercoat. Roscoe is 6 months old and he has a long luxerious coat but I know better than to think it willl stay that way. So when abouts do you see undercoat come in?

A lot depends upon the breeding behind the puppy, as different lines mature at different rates. In my experience the sables virtually always 'coat up' a lot quicker than the tris. This is very apparent when watching puppies at a show. The sables are all little bundles of fluff, the tris look silky and more elegant, the merles look like smooth collies.

My Revel comes from a late maturing line and he wasn't finished until he was at least 3 years old and was at his peak at 6-7 years which is when he did most of his winning. Yogi looked very ready at six months and had quite a reasonable coat at a year, but hit his peak earlier, about 4. Don't worry the fluff will come. I think I read in your other post that he is going to be neutered soon? This will have an impact on his coat. Both my boys are intact but Merlin is neutered and his coat is very different, much 'fluffier'. Yogi's brother is also neutered and he has twice the coat of Yogi, which is saying a lot as in full coat Yogi is a haystack on the move:lol:

Some lines also carry much more coat than others and (intact) dogs usually have more than bitches.

Looking at Roscoe's pics, and I could be wrong as it's never easy to tell, I would expect him to carry a nice dense tri coat eventually, especially if neutered. But you might have to wait another 6 months at least to see it coming in. Again, not sure how neutering will affect it but they usually have a very big moult at around 12-14 months before growing a coat in ernest.

Do keep up updated on coat progress please:yes:

We have two here that could not be more differant in coat texture, length.both are from same breeder, but differant moms, same dad.

Jasper has always had a thick, dense, course coat. Now that he is growing out,he is going to be a yr. old soon..his coat is long, thick, and still very course & stand offish. When he was really young,he really had no visable long guard hairs, and if he had any, they were so very light, almost white.

Trapp on the other hand, had long guard hairs from the time we brought him home.As he matured (now 13 months) especially in the last 2 months,he has coated up really nicely.Prior..he had no undercoat to speak off.Very long coat, but no undercoat, and looked sleek. And not a course hair anywheres.

Now he is a puff ball, and his coat is still getting thicker.Should be a fun time when they both blow coats...
