When to migrate to adult food?

I started Cambria on adult food as soon as I got her. The protein and fat content of the food she gets that is adult is about the same as alot of 'puppy' foods so I just made the switch. she'll be 4 and a 1/2 months this week.

I think I did it with Noah at 5 months or so, Mia went for almost a year on it, just depends on the puppy. The only real difference is usually the fat and protein content.

I did mine before 1 year. Bacca was starting to chunk up pretty well, and it just did not seem necessary to keep him on that diet any longer. I think I did it at the same time that I switched from Pro Plan, btw.

I usually start switching them when they are done growing and holding weight. If the are getting fat then the extra nutrients in puppy food is not needed. I find that most neutered and spaying dogs can change at 8-9 months, intact dogs usually need to stay on it longer.

Examples of my dogs.
I changed Ember at 8 months, she was done growing and even though she was intact at the time, she was gaining too much weight. She went right to an adult maintenace food. I always struggle with her weight.

Juctice stayed on puppy food until he was 14 months old and then switch to a preformance food. He was done growing at 10 months but was intact, really actice and had a hard time maintaining weight. He still does even at almost 8.

Diva, I switch at 11 months almost 1 yr and she went onto the preformance food Justice was on. Only reason I switched her was I didn't want to buy another bag of puppy. She was like Justce really activem intact and had a hard time holding weight. At 1.5yrs is holding weight better. She has been on raw for 1 month as her co owner wanted to put her on that because she was so skinny. She is doing great on it.

Well, Iris being a year and a couple of months is still on her puppy food because the vet said to start transitioning her around 1 yr-1yr and a half... Iris is pretty much free fed and really doesnt seem to be putting on any weight, I cant feel her ribs or anything, but she is definitly not round. ... is my vet a quack for wanting me to stay on it a bit longer, is it because of her weight ? Or should I just start transitioning her a.s.a.p?

Should be able to feel(not see) the ribs, breastbone, and spine without pressing hard and also see a slight hourglass shape at the waist and a slight tuck up(dogs older than 6 months) from the side. If they don't, they are overweight.

ok , yeah I meant I cant see her ribs but I can feel them ever so slightly, she does have that hourglass shape. Im glad to know shes not underweight, time to change vets. Thank you for the help :)

I transitioned Deska at 6-7mths on the suggestion of my vet. Deska was getting a little chubby and puppy food is basically higher fat and a little higher protein.

I did the same with Sadie and Ginny when they reached 6-7 months old. Ginny was especially looking a bit round.

I moved Smudge over at about 7 months, and couldn't keep weight on him. :dead: The vet wants him to gain at least a few more pounds.

I don't think I'm going to change Fluffy's food until she is a year old. I'm still deciding what her adult food is going to be.
