Wicket

I hate to sound dumb but I'm new at all this. I know height is important for showing and other things. I'm just wondering what a wicket is.

A wicket is a device used to measure height.

There are different kinds of wickets. One type is bascially a ruler with a top bar on it that sides up and down. It rests on the highest part of the shoudler.

There is also a fixed height wicket that is used during shows. For shelties it is set at 16in or 13 in. It doesn't measure the exact height but the idea is if the dog is oversized the 16in wicket lifts from the table if they are bigger than 16". The other side of the specturm is the 13" wicket doesn't lift from the table if they are under 13". Both are bad, you get to leave the ring and you will get a nice offical letter from the AKC. 3 letters and you can't show that dog again.

There is also the free standing wicket that is used to measure dogs for agility. You stand the dog and the judge swings the bar over their shoulders. It is to determine what jump height the dog should compete in.

I have one of Mel's wickets -- I love it! But if you're not doing conformation or obedience/rally/agility, it's a luxury.
