My pup just does not know when to stop I think.. She will run and run and run. I always bring a bowl of water outside with me when we play, but she will rarely go to it when I have either a frisbee or tennis ball in my hand. I have to physically bring her back inside, put her in her crate with a bowl of water so she will drink. The only thing is that lately (its been getting alot warmer here in MD) she will get sick after running around alot. I think it is just from her panting so hard and drinking so fast but I wanted to see if anybody else has experienced this with their pups. Sometimes she will look as if she has to yawn, then gag a little bit and she will catch herself but on occasion she will actually throw up. For the most part its all of the water she just inhaled so I'm assuming she just pushed herself a bit too far.. I am thinking I might actually have to limit her to how much she does after a certain amount of time! I never take her out to play after eating so I don't upset her with a full belly. We usually go out for 20-30 minute sessions of fetching the ball and frisbee a few times a day and then she goes for walks around the property with me or my gf a few times a day also. Maybe its just too much for her at one time?

Shelties will absolutely overdo it. My girls will tear around until somebody pulls a muscle. I've heard of Shelties getting heat stroke from playing too long and hard in the heat. You have to be the sensible one. Watch her to see if she's panting; cool her down from a run and offer water slowly. Since she's a puppy, she hasn't developed enough sense yet to guage her own needs. She sure is lucky to get so much attention and activity!

Yes, I agree with Chris, they will most certainly overdo it. Smoke will run himself ragged playing with Apollo, because Apollo is bigger and with his longer legs much faster. If I let the game go on too long Smoke will start coughing and sometimes starts to gag. So I get to be the bad guy and step in to stop the fun before someone gets hurt

Try play for shorter periods
Sadie is about the same age as your girl, I think. (you said 9 months old somewhere else?) She also loves playing fetch with balls and frisbees and will run herself off her feet if I let her.
It was suggested to me to play with her for shorter periods so I'll play fetch with her for 5 minutes, the we'll walk around the park for a bit (5-10 minutes), then we'll play for a few more minutes. This way she has a bit of a break in between and doesn't run herself to exhaustion.
30 minutes of continuous running is maybe a bit much for a puppy her age. You might instead try 15 minutes twice a day.
Sadie always drinks her water too fast too, but I don't think to the extreme yours does. Sadie just lets out loud, gross water burps that almost sound human

In her much younger days, Bows would over do it. There was one time where I decided she had enough and stopped throwing the stick, she then took a poop and was so tired, fell over backwards and ended up sitting on the poop. There was a couple times I ended up carrying her home and then squirting her off with the hose to cool down.

You have actually answered your own question. Seems to me you already have enough sense to know that she is overexerting herself. We have to set the limits because they enjoy playing just a little too much.

Treader doesn't. When he starts to get tired he will refuse to go.

But even purebreds don't always follow all the general rules of their breed.She will usually bring the toy we are playing with back and kinda give me the look like "ok I'm getting tired" but as soon as I pick it up to put away so I don't accidentally run it over with the lawnmower or something, she takes off running again LOL. I have been limiting her a bit more and all has been well but she is catching on to me. I will open up the door and she will run in, take a drink of water then immediately go to her cage and lay down (I use the "calm" command when I point in there so she knows its time to chill out). She will sit for a few minutes then runs right back to the sliding glass door and looks at me like OK MORE!
