Wobbler syndrome????

Haven't posted here in quite some time. My Sheltie, Olive, is doing amazingly well. My post is actually related to my brother's new puppy, Laika (yes after the space dog!). Laika is a 15week old doberman. Her brother is her daddy and her mother is then also her grandmother, sort of. The breeder said they had an "accident" and so my brother has the puppy as they couldn't sell.

Anyway... Laika is displaying possible wobbler syndrome. She has very wobbly hind legs, almost buckling at times (she will fall and have difficulty getting back up). She urinates and defecates in her crate daily. She is not particularly alert or active although she does have a few toys she plays with on her own. She is fed in her crate and taken out at regular intervals. Most concerning, she will collapse and face-plant at random times. She also does the bunny-hop run (two hind legs together). None of this seems normal. Laika is up to date on all her shots. She'll be going to a vet this week. In the meantime I thought I would reach out to all of you for ideas. Anything would be appreciated!

The bunny hop run is a classic sign of hip dysplasia. If she's collapsing and has wobbly hind legs she may have bad or missing hip joints. You're right though, it could also be a neurological issue. I thought dogs had to be a bit older to get CVM, but what I know is only second hand so I could be wrong. The accidents in the crate might not be an issue, depends how long she is stuck in there, and I've known some very laid back dobe puppies.

Be interested in hearing what the vet says. Did the breeder get the puppies checked out by a vet before selling them on? Your poor brother might be in for some big expenses if something is wrong.

To my knowledge, Laika was checked out by a vet in Canada when she got her vaccinations. I have next to no info about the actual breeder, although if Laika does have hip problems, that to me is a serious miss on the breeder's part.

She's not in a crate all day. She is crated at night, maybe 7 hours total. During the day I think it's about the same. She was catatonic when first in their house. We'd put her in the great room and she wouldn't move... for HOURS. I wonder now if that was due to psych or more likely to pain or plain inability to get up and move. I visited a few weeks ago and thought she was just afraid of the two steps leading up to the front door. I carried her down and carried her back up. Again I wonder now if she's having difficulty with hips.

It's a difficult situation in general. Brother got married and moved into the house about 2 months ago. He and his wife are expecting. And puppy has some mysterious ailment. Am crossing my fIngers whatever it is, is manageable.
