We had a friend over 2 days ago. He's not a dog fan, but understood that we were training her and the she was easily excitable.
Anytime I wasn't hushing her away, she would lunge at our guest, trying to climb and touch his hands, even when he was 100% ignoring her.
I thought she would get calmer, tired and would stop, but even after a good 20 minutes she kept continuing and anytime I thought she was getting calmer, sat down at an acceptable distance from the guest, she would just wait for the perfect moment and go at it again.
When I walk with her, depending if I can see it coming or not, I can get Zoey to sit and the person will pass by and Zoey will remain calm (she will either stay sitting, or standing without trying to reach the person). However if I just turn a corner and didn't see the person coming, I'm usually in trouble
Zoey's excitement escalates VERY high, and VERY fast. By the time my I can react, she's already jumping, barking, spinning, and not responding at all. If she sees someone that was walking and then starts running, she will go in excited mode within a nanosecond (or it feels like it does).
Zoey has responded very well to some diversion techniques. For example, if our bedroom door is opened, she get super excited, rush into the bedroom and go under the bed. BUT if command her to stay before she reaches the bedroom, she will stay at the door frame, will remain really calm, and will not enter the room.
Same thing for the stairs. Our door has a small cubby and stairs leading up. If we let her go up the stairs before we get up there, she will wait for us and bark at us once we reach the stairs. However, if we ask her to stay downstairs, go up the stairs and then call her, she will be extremely calm.
We try to think outside the box for things that we can actually plan in advance, but most encounters Zoey gets excited are unavoidable. When we get her to puppy class, tired or not, she will bark at the trainer if he's giving attention to the other dogs and it's become quite the embarassment.
Zoey is not good at the watch me with me. I will have to practice that.
