    Places to take my puppy

Thanks, and I am aware about Lowe's new policy. I still take her there and the workers are fine with it. She sits in a cart and doesn't cause trouble. I also have seen many dogs there. Hobby Lobby would be a great idea, I'm really into arts and crafts, so I could shop and socialize her at the...

    Places to take my puppy

I'm taking my 8 month old sheltie Christy out 3-4 times a week as desensitization to new surroundings and people. So far the only places we go on a regular basis is at lowe's/home depot and a nice park. That's about it. I can't take her to petsmart since she is still reactive to dogs that she...

    The Sheltie Sniff-Down

My Christy does this too . She usually jumps up and wags her tail like crazy. Then when she calms down, she sniffs my shoes and pants. Especially after a riding lesson, since she smells horses.

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

Thanks :smile2:. I'm so glad we went to this class. It was lots of fun. I'm sure Christy enjoys it under her fear. And we will definitely consider agility, in fact the reason I want her to be less fearful is so we can eventually compete for fun.

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

If anybody's curious on how Christy is doing, here's an update: She is much more calm around strangers when on our walks.:biggrin2: She still will react to dogs, but its not as bad. We go to a nice park, and visit Lowes on a daily basis. She gets to just watch the surroundings, and do some...

    Getting used to cat

Some good news, yesterday night I took Christy outside to pee, and I didn't know that our cat was in the kitchen on a rug. It was dark, and I didn't see the cat. I was calling Christy, and she was distracted a little, then she came. I looked closer, and realized the cat was there. Thankfully the...

    Getting used to cat

They are still not used to each other:no:, and it's been about 2 months. I guess its improving. My cat comes into the living room more often and is less scared of Christy. Usually the cat comes out in the afternoon and night. In the afternoon, Christy is usually in her crate sleeping. Christy...

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

That's true, I realized that her martingale is making her tense up. It chokes her when she reacts, and I know I wouldn't like to be choked while I see something scary. Now I use an easy walk harness with lots of treats, praise, and guidance. Although the harness is a medium and is a little...

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

Thanks! We will keep on doing these things every week. I am noticing that Christy looks at me much more, and even is starting to connect scary objects with treats. I also got her a easy walk harness as a more gentle tool instead of the choke chain, so this may make Christy feel more calm.

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

Your Welcome! And I have more good news. We had to babysit our 4 year old cousin for about 6 hours yesterday. Before she came over, I was nervous about Christy's reaction, especially with her reaction towards kids. What we did was keep her in a crate with a stuffed kong. When our cousin came...

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

Here's a new update on 7 month old Christy's barking, there are still some problems but some improvements: When we had several guests over, we would usually put her in her crate with a Kong ball at first, and then let her out when she wants to see the guests. She usually barks and growls at the...

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

Yesterday we took Christy to the farmer's market, and she did surprisingly better than expected. The car ride was much better, she did drool, but not as much and she never threw up :). We went to the Davis farmer's market early in the morning, and it was pretty crowded. There were lots of...

    Chewing toys

I want to get some toys for my 7 month old puppy to chew and gnaw on without the high risks of intestinal problems. I got her a nylabone edible, and she was chewing it away so quickly. She broke off a huge chunk of the bone and swallowed it. I was so worried that it would damage and block her...

    sheltie barking/growling at strangers

edit- we took her for a pretty good walk today. Probably because we didn't come across any people walking on the path :rolleyes2:. But we did venture farther and closer to some basketball players. Christy did watch them with ears perked up, but was comfortable enough to focus on me, do some...
