    How Tall is Your Sheltie?

B is around 16" but I couldn't get a more precise measurement than that. I think he's a little outsized. He's not particularly dainty for a sheltie, he's about 28 pounds now, and we're still working on getting the extra off.

    Fostering questions

I fostered briefly for an all-breed rescue. It was hard, but over time we came to understand that our rescue (who we had for 6 months) wasn't the right dog for us and our lifestyle. Our rescue was super supportive - they provided free daycare and free vet care. It was really hard to come to...

Strange foods my puppy loves to eat...

Mine happily ate a packing peanut yesterday and he's six years old. SIGH. No excuse, B. I thought dogs shouldn't have spicy food because they can't taste the spice but it can still "burn" them? Is that an internet myth?

    Sneezing before barking???

I am comforted to hear that sneezy snorts are just part of the sheltie charm. I was kind of wondering if we had a food allergy with how many sneezysnorts we get. Morning "I'm in the bed horray!" sneezysnorts. Rubbing the couch like a cat sneezysnorts. Tall ones are on the computer and ignoring...

    First Post

What a charmer! Thank you for sharing pictures and welcome! Beau and I are both a bit jealous of her fresh salmon diet. I'd never have guessed she wasn't a full sheltie unless told, but you can see the eskimo a little in her nose and around her eyes.

    Sneezing before barking???

Actually, I know what you're talking about. Mine sort of snorts a few times before doing his barking/sheltie dance routine before meals or after coming in from the back yard. *SHNORK!* Mommy Mommy I peed in the bush it was awesome can I have some cheese I love you bark bark bark! It's not quite...

    Dog class trainer etiquette?

He's a volunteer, as is everyone else who "works" for the dog club. It's a communally owned property maintained by membership dues and class fees. The people who do the scheduling, teaching, bill paying, etc are all volunteers. I think it's a very neat structure but it does mean I have no idea...

    Saying Hi from Colorado!

What a cutie! Sounds like mine, a gentle soul. I've heard they sometimes start barking more later in life even if they're not barkers as a pup, esp if you have two dogs. Beware the bark bark. That's a good idea for his name. You will need to settle on something to call him, though you can...

    Dog class trainer etiquette?

Alright, glad it's not just me who thought this was unreasonable! I was steaming but this class is at the end of a 16 hour day for me, so I wasn't exactly at my best. I'm going to try to find out if this is standard policy for all the dog club classes, or if it's just this one instructor's...

    Dog class trainer etiquette?

So, we started our first official training class yesterday. My husband and I have both had dogs before but have never really trained particularly well. Beau is a smart little rescue who clearly had a lot of training before we got him, but we have some communication issues we're still working...

    Wanted: Sheltie in southern oregon

There don't seem to be many shelties where I am, either! You could try http://www.pnwssc.com/ for breeder tips or rescue, or the Northern California branch, if that's reasonable? http://www.norcalsheltierescue.org/

    Grooming disaster

I would be livid, too. I think you're completely justified! Her poor belly! Her ruff! Oh, I would be so mad. There is no way I would pay for that. At least Zoey is still adorable. She looks kind of like a corgi? This is why I'm refusing to get B groomed until I can get a solid...

    Shelties hate paw-shake?

Beau loves to shake. I was trying to get him to do down on one of our first days together, and he was like NO PAW. PAW. "Really, Beau? Would you like to shake?" PAAAAWWWW with a great big grin on his face. I think it's his favorite trick. If you kneel down in front of him, he just wants to shake...

    Two sorry shelties

Lexi, you are making your mother very frustrated! I agree that we take crating harder than our dogs do. They LIKE having a safe den. Remember you're doing it for her health as much as your sanity, she could easily eat something dangerous whilst chewing. My old foster was a holy terror and...

    Stinky bum - TMI problems!

Just got back from the vet, she said he had a fair bit of blood in the glands. There was probably an infection causing the leakage, she thinks. We got them expressed and a course of antibiotics. A good dog butt is a butt I never have to explicitly think about beyond "what hilarious fluffy...
