Allergies and moving 2 biggest excuses people use when they don't want to be bother but don't want to just come out and say so. I think over half of the animals surrender to my humane society list this as the reason.

I myself am allergic to rabbits and cats what am I thinking being a veterinarian.

After we had had Charlie (the Sheltie I grew up with) about 6 months, my mom tested positive for being allergic to him. She kind of jokingly said, "Well, it's me or the dog." My youngest sister, who was about 2 at the time, went and got Mom's suitcase. . .

moving, ok, maybe some latitude because circumstances changed. but allergies after a yr...hmmm...my take is within a week or mth, and again...why couldn't they get back with the breeder? Not knocking craigslist but c'mon-certainly BETTER ways to handle it. But I think in our disposable society-NO ONE will admit they couldn't handle the "responsibility" of a pet. It is HARDER than it looks to do it right. Allergies can be managed-and I think it is great that they didn't stop your career choice!

Good for you Dr. Shelli for not let allergies get in the way of loving animals. I just don't understand people who bring home puppies and don't plan on keeping them for as long as they live! Once they're not puppies anymore they're neglected. Why bring them home in the first place? So irresponsible. I wouldn't give away my dog to anyone for any price, and I wouldn't move anywhere that won't let me take her with me. "I'm moving to an apartment and they don't allow pets" Then.. find an apartment that does? Am I simplifying things here?

This is exactly what I did when I was searching for an apartment. I had a cat, and she was coming with me. My requirements for an apartment included that they allow pets and that the pet deposit/fee wasn't ridiculous.

On the other side of things, you have my friend Melissa. Melissa decided she wanted to move closer to work. She picked a more expensive apartment, and decided she couldn't afford the pet fee and therefore couldn't take her cat. So then she was posting on Facebook for somebody to please take her cat, because if she couldn't find somebody, she was going to take him to the shelter. She had only rescued him from a shelter 6 months earlier and he was a year old! So I took him in.. and I'm keeping him for the rest of his life. Her situation was 100% preventable. She didn't have to move into an apartment where she couldn't afford the pet fee. I don't understand it. He's a great cat, too.

RIGHT ON!!!! I wish they would plaster that EVERYWHERE, that cute and fuzzy GROWS up...not like a toy...ugh

people have NO sense, and can't think beyond today and it makes me NUTS that so many pets suffer from human stupidity and fickleness
