10.18.09 Open Session: Sheltie Memories

I have a muriad of funny sheltie atories. They are all on my website. The dunniest one was the day Rocky was brought home. Rocky was 8 weeks old and just wanted to play. We brought him in and most of the dogs growled or ignored him. They kept looking at him like he was an appetizer. Well Rocky wanted to play so he went searching for anything one to play. He went charging into my room (he had never been in my house before) and there was my alpha male Marcus on his bed in my room. Well little Rock went in and immediately laid on Marcus' bed next to him. Marcus just moved over for him. The next thing you know Rocky is getting all his toys we bought for him and laying them on Marcus' bed. Then Rocky decided he needed to rearrange the bed and started dragging the bed and blankets around the room. Poor Marcus kept having to move, and this was when he was so sick. Didn't matter to Rocky, he just found his new buddy. Marcus protected Rocky against all the other dogs and let Rocky tale over his bed and bury his toys there. Poor Marcus would go to lay down qand he would have to move toys, only to have Rocky pile them up there while he was laying there. I am Italian and Marcus had that evil eye down (my Rachie did too) Marcus passed 11 months later. Rocky mourned Marcus' passing for several months after that and would no longer lay on the bed that had been Marcus'. Now Rocky is the new alpha male here and takes it very seriously.

I think I may have told this story already, but I still laugh about it....

Your dad is the exact opposite from mine. My dad threw a wall eyed fit when he learned we were actually going to pay money for a dog. He told me, and I quote, "When I was growing up if somebody's dog had puppies we gave them away for free!"

:eek2:

Tuesday afternoon when I went to my great aunt's party I brought Smudge. She looked at him and then looked at me. She looked back down at Smudge and said, "Well...did you have to pay for him?"

:rolleyes2: You have no idea. I'm still paying for him!

Such wonderful stories. Once you've been touched by a sheltie, your heart is never the same.

I grew up without a dog (the horror!) although both my mom & I begged for one for years. But my dad was of depression farm stock and refused to have a 'pet' dog, they were dirty, they tied you down, etc., etc.

He retired and he and my mom built their dream house to move into. Lo and behold Christmas morning arrives and what's under the tree for my mom but a copy of Sheltie Talk with a note that my dad all on his own had contacted a breeder and had put a deposit on a sheltie puppy. Shock waves went through our entire family that my DAD had done this all of his own volition. My mom confessed to me later (I was at university at this point and was just visiting them) that she didn't really even want a dog anymore.

But we all went out a few days later to meet the puppy. The breeder had selected a tri male that was obviously going to be oversized. Dad had decided on a sheltie as friends of the family had two and he'd always like their dogs. None of us even remember my dad noticing these two dogs so again, shock.

Darby came home at eight weeks and was the love of their life for 9 years. He was the smartest, gentlest dog I've ever known. He died of cancer far too young. The day he died was the first day I ever saw my father cry.

Aw great...now I'm tearing up all over again. <sniff>...back to work for a bit.

Norah, what a wonderful story.

Your father must be an extremely thoughtful and caring person to remember all those years of your mum wanting a dog.

What a great tribute to your father.

Norah,

My skin is tingling reading this story! It's one of those tender moments that our parents share that we don't always see as we are growing up. We tend to see only the bad stuff (i.e. he won't let us get a dog!).

I remember when I had moved away from the house, I went home for Xmas one year. My mom really, really wanted a cat, but my Dad hates them and has minor allergies so there was no way he was going to bite.

Just before Xmas, I went shopping with my Dad. He excused himself to do some shopping on his own but wouldnt show me what was in the bag. Xmas morning came and Dad had bought Mom a huge cat ceramic. No it did not purr or cuddle, but neither did it poop! All he did was acknowedge my Mom's wish in that simple gesture.
