I remember when her litter was born... her mother (Gemmy) was so big at the end of her pregnancy that she couldn't lay on her belly or side: she would just lay on her back, with all four legs splayed out! That's how she nursed her puppies, too; she'd lay on her back and they'd sort of crawl all over her belly and latch on.
I think this was the last litter we whelped upstairs, before Mom and Dad finished the work on the house and built the new "dog room". I remember that Gemmy went into labor in the late evening, so we went all through the night. It was not a brief labor.
It was a nice, consistent litter. We had a boy and a girl who were very correct. I liked the boy better, because he had nicer head detail, but Mom preferred the girl, because she had a very sweet face. The boy is now Am/Can Ch. Rabbit Run Maritime ("Robbie"), and he has proved to be a useful sire for getting nice, moderate dogs.
And the girl, of course, is Checkers! She was always a very special little dog. Ann, I am so very glad that Checkers came home to you. Thank you for letting her shine!
