Hi I'm having troubles with my 21/2 year old sheltie. He gets distracted very easily and I take him out in yard to go potty and he runs around barks chases cars going behind fence people animals ect and sometimes goes and sometimes just messes around. Than he comes in and pees around couch or chair. He's good when I go to work during day keep him in kitchen with my other sheltie. Usually about 6-7 hours. It's at night and evening he's peeing and sometimes poops too in house. I walk him and always go out with him to potty several times! Not sure what to do I also use enzymatic cleaner because he smells around and sometimes have caught him in the act. I don't scold him just say no loud and take him right out. He usually gets me up 2-3 times a night to go out if I dont get up right away he'll pee somewhere. I tried belly band and he peed in it. I tried keeping him in kitchen at night and he howled and shook the gate for longer than I can remember most of night. any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks sleepless libby

have you had him tested for a UTI- if he's 2.5 yrs old, he should be able to hold it all night without getting you up to let him out...............

Hi No I haven't had his urine tested. Just thought I was doing something wrong didnt think he could have a health issue because he's young. Had to vet for regular checks. Will get this checked. Thanks

We had some trouble house training Poppy. It took us several months to have it under control and many different approaches, yet in the end using a bell worked best.

Every time we took Poppy outside to "go potty", we had her ring a bell. We would brush her paw across the bells, and then let her into the yard. Though we have a fence, we would use a leash to walk Poppy outside to her spot. The leash allowed us to control and correct unwanted behavior, such as barking and chasing. If she did not go, we walked her back inside immediately. However, when she did go, we would reward her on the spot with a treat, and then play inside the house with her favorite toy. Within 5 days, she learned how to use the bell, and within a week, the accidents dissapeared. To this day, five months later, there has not been a single incident.

When we first attempted this approach in an apartment, we were less fortunate and Poppy did not make the connection. She was unable to clearly connect the bell with going outside to pee, since several floors and roads had to be crossed before she was given an opportunity. If you can, give him immediate access to a potty spot once he rings the bell and with luck he will learn quickly. From there, he will be able to use the bell in more complex environments, such as an apartment.

I know that unlike Poppy, your dog is now a mature male. However, I hope some of these pointers may help tame his unpredictable behavior :)
Best of luck!

If there is no medical problems it Sounds like a training issue. GO back to treating him like a puppy again. Crate him or tether him to you when you cant watch him. When you take him outside to potty put him on a leash, no talking, or playing. If he goes lots of praise and treats, then he can play. if he doesn't go put him back in the crate for 5-10 minutes, repeat until he goes outside. At night crate him, yes you are going to have some sleepless nights! I suggest earplugs LOL! He is used to getting his own way so you just have to be more stubborn that he is.
