a gentle leader is great for head strong dogs. A friend's lab was a terror on a leash till she got him one. After a few weeks he got used to it without breaking his spirit. They got to the point where he knew that if it was on he was supposed to obey, even off-leash!

A friend on the forum, she knows who she is, sent me a harness for Jake but he still lunges at the neighbor's dogs so I am planning on getting him a gentle this week. Any guesses on size for my oversized boy?

take him with you to the pet store and try the different sizes on- get an employee who knows how they should fit to help you. won't work well unless it's fit correctly.

When used properly, Halti's and Gentle Leaders are meant to be training aid, not a substitute for training. If the owner so chooses, they can usually wean the dog off of the halter.

This is what my trainer said too. I am to practice with him for a couple of month with a halti. It is not to be used permanently.

What is interesting is when I put a halti on him, I felt like his spirit was down like what Ashley said. But my trainder didn't think that way. She thought his energy went down to one notch. I understand that my dog should be calm and submissive to me even when we go out for a walk. But I love it when he is in a high spirit and excited to go out for a walk as well. I am torned.

I use a Gentle Leader on my beagle mix - he was fitted by a behavioral vet. He has been wearing it for walks for at least 5 years. He still doesn't like it but he also has always been excited to go for a walk- even wearing the GL. Since he is a confirmed cat chaser and there are plenty of wandering cats in the neighborhood, he will probably always wear it when we go for walks. Do what you gotta do

Caro, Jake is built a lot like Deska, about 17.5 inches tall with a ling muzzle so if I can't take him to the store with me I will get a medium. Jake lunges at all the dogs and cats he sees and sometimes I feel like I live in dog heaven. We have everything from chihuahuas to great danes here. And I can't count the numbers of cats.

I am rethinking jake's reaction to dogs and no longer think it is totally fear based. I have been placing myself between him and the dogs when we are close to home and doing sits and the other day he snapped at my leg. We were still about 20 feet away from the door and he definitely didn't like me being in his way. I close my hand around his muzzle and told him NO. I hope I did the right thing. I don't really like muzzles but if we can walk to the house in peace then maybe he will learn to be calm and not lunge at other dogs. Then we can go back to a regular collar and leash. My thinking is that it will be easier for him to learn the right way to approach other dogs so that he can get more treats and praise.
