A new sheltie Puppy!!

Welcome to the forum. Love Hazel. She is so cute.I just got another puppy 2 weeks ago and his name is Sting and I have my 7 year yr. old Shadow.

Welcome! Hazel is sooooooo cute!! I love when they are puppies! Everyone is right, you will be addicted to this forum and shelties! I cannot imagine ever having another breed!

I live in Winnipeg, so as you can imagine it is very cold here. I use booties with my two puppies. What kind of booties did you get? I found that it makes all the difference! I found a local lady here that makes soft booties made from fleece. My two don't mind wearing them. (you can see pics of them with their boots on my album) They will not wear the booties that have the hard soles at all. With my last sheltie, I had to put Musher's Wax (invisible boot) on his paws first, then I put on his booties (which were infant mittens with velcro). That was the only way I could get him to keep the boots on. I think it is because the wax, stuck to the boot and he could not 'feel' the boot on his paws anymore. Keep at it, it is well worth it, as their paws don't get cold. I like to stay out a lot, so I am thankful for their boots! :smile2:
 
They are both beautiful dogs. I was thinking about trying out the wax with some baby socks. Hazel is still getting use to us and the leash, so she refuses to move when there is any resistance. Leash training is on my list of thinks to teacher after, house breaking her, kennel training, teaching her, her food bowl will not bite her back, and how to play with a ball.
 
My oh my, sounds like you have quite the list! LOL
When I got Maia, she refused to walk on a leash. She would walk with the leash attached to her collar, but the second I picked it up, even without any resistance, she would but on all four brakes! There was a recent thread about leash training recently with great advice on there.
If you do use baby socks or mitts, you will still have to velcro them on as they will come off (trust me, I've tried!). It is much easier to get them used to the boots when they are young. My two, will still hide from me when they see that I have the boots in my hands. But once they are on, they stay on. It also helps to distract the puppy as soon as the boots are on, so they will not have time to try to get them off. Try playing a favourite game or something, something that she really likes and finds irresistible!

Not to forget teaching pup that Mom and Dad are NOT very herding! Save that for the neighbour's cat! :biggrin2:

p.s. since I got Indy, I'm not herded anymore! Yey! Bacca herds Indy instead! Poor Indy! :rolleyes2::smile2:
