Abscess?

I am so upset......was petting Cooper yesterday and felt this grape sized lump on the right side of Cooper's face, sort of between his eye and ear opening. It felt hard, he didn't even wince when I palpated it, so it didn't seem like it was painful. Needless to say, I googled everything possible last night, and of course really thinking the worst. I took him to the vet today and he first asked if he'd been bitten by anything. I hadn't seen anything, and other than playing some in the yard with my daughter's dog, he's been with me every minute.
So he shaved the area to get a better look (even with the electric razor that close to his eye and ear, he never so much as jumped), and then aspirated some bloody looking fluid out of it. He thinks it's an abscess, and put him on 2 different antibiotics, Tramadol for pain, and told me to apply warm compresses at least twice daily. I have to take him back in two days and if it hasn't gone down he said he would open it up and put in a small drain. I'm going to try and give you an idea of how it looks with a pic in my next post. Anyone had anything like this on their sheltie???

Yes! Bitsy Boodle had the exact same type of swelling a while back. At first we thought she'd been stung, but the vet said it was an abscess. The antibiotics reduced the infection, but our vet scheduled her for dental surgery a couple of days later. Quick action saved two adjacent teeth!

Another member just had the same experience. Don't panic. You have nothing to fear but dental bills -- your vet has it under control.

And aren't Shelties stoic?

Awww! Poor Cooper. I'm glad it's not bothering him too much, it looks like it would hurt. Praying all goes well tomorrow at the vet.:fl

Cooper

It isn't actually a tooth problem. Matter of fact, it isn't near his mouth, but higher up, between his eye and ear. Anyone had anything like this to suddenly appear?
