Hi there

I'm new around here ... so go easy on me :uhoh:

We have a new Sheltie at home, her name is Holly and she is 7. She is making great company for our 5 year old male Ned.

She has made the perfect transition, she has been with us for about 9 months and seems to love it around here and gets along very well with Ned.

She was sleeping inside for the first few months and was no problem. However out of nowhere she started weeing in the middle of the night.

She would go outside before bed and would have a wee ...

She could be inside for 6, 8, 10 hours during the day and no problems. If she wants to go out she just goes and sits by the door.

It seems to be that she has this wee as soon as we all go to bed, only minutes after she has been out for a wee.

Any suggestions as it is getting colder here at night (Australia) and I'd rather her be inside.

For info it is definitely Holly as Ned has been sleeping in for the past month, while Holly has been outside and there are no problems.

Appreciate any help!

Have you had her to a vet to rule out any infections or other problems? Do take her to see one cuz this could be the problem.

Good point. She hasn't been to one recently, she appears to be in perfect health ... But I'll try anything!!
 
I adopted a 6 year old female last year and ended up with a similar problem. We took her in and she had a urinary tract infection and we also found out that she was in the beginning stages of Juvenile Kidney disease and now she is on a special kidney diet food. I would have her checked out. My girl still has issues and leeks every night but it's due to the fact that she drinks a lot of water because of the kidney issue. She has a crate that she sleeps in with special dog blankets. I have to wash her blankets all the time but I don't mind because it's not on my floors and I know that she can't help it. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Hi, I know this is a Shetland Sheepdog forum I do have one. However your dogs problem sounds like Spanky ( Chi ).
Our Vet checked her out for a UTI (urinary tract infection) however no bacteria was found. She now takes this medication to help relieve the discomfort. It is called,Methioform. He explained to me that she isn't drinking enough liquids. So when she does relieve herself there isn't enough unine coming out. Which makes her have to go out more often. Because it's a small trickle that comes out.
I had to figure out what she likes to drink to drink more at a time.
I then tried some canned vegetable soup and YES she loves it and drinks lots of the liquid of the soup and eats some veges too.
Make sure it doesn't have onion in it as this is toxic to dogs and cats.
I don't know if this is your sweetie's problem but go to your Vet and take in a urine sample if you can collect one and have her checked.It may be a medical problem. Once that is ruled out try a dog behaviorist and ask them what to do
 
Definitely rule out health first, thats the number one thing. some times you don't realize they have anything wrong with them until it gets really bad, especially with urinary tract infections.

I had a similar issue with Sadie that I've only recently figured out. She's just too smart for her own good.

I could leave her all day in or out of her crate and there would be no accidents. She can go 8-10 hours without going. Then in the evening when we were home, 2 hours after being outside she would pee on the floor. Sadie has no health problems. :no:

I finally spoke to my dog trainer about the problem and when it was happening. It ALWAYS happened when I went to take a shower and my husband was watching her. My trainer has been telling me that she is exceptionally smart, even for a sheltie (they're one of the smartest breeds). Still, I under estimated her intelligence. Sadie is like my child, she goes with me everywhere and follows me around the house. I've worked with her alot, I'm training her in agility and flyball and we have a bond that she doesn't have with my husband. But when I go shower, she's no longer the centre of my attention and I cut her off by shutting the door. She's peeing on the floor because she's upset with me! I NEVER would have thought my little angel was capable of such a thing! Or so smart that she would retaliate at being left out of the bathroom!:eek2:

If its not a health related issue with your dog, maybe its something similar. Perhaps she doesn't think you should be going to sleep and wants you to get up. I solved the problem by crating Sadie when I shower or having my husband keep a CLOSE eye on her. So far there have been no more accidents. If she has no medical problems, try crating her at night, dogs are clean animals and don't tend to mess where they sleep. Maybe after a while you'll be able to stop crating her and life will resume as normal. :smile2:
 
Thanks everybody, she is booked into the vet. That said my feeling is that she is probably fine.

She has been in the past 2 nights and no problems, she hasn't moved from near our bed.

I have blocked off the area where she had been going, fingers crossed. I'm hoping it may have been a habit that I have put an end to ... time will tell.
 
I agree with the vet check. She could have contracted a UTI. I prevent any problems by feeding my kids dried cranberries. Just a couple at a time once a week. It helps keep the urine acidic and will kill bacteria. Give it a try.
