IF the surface was like it shows in the video I wouldn't hesitate to run my guys on it. heck thier dog run is a lot iceyer then that surface was and they tear around that like no tomorrow, but seeing as how the kids are not going to be running it shouldn't be an issue, as for me I would run with Ice tracks on
over my gore tex trail shoes so I would have lots of grip. Carnaval is a blast if you decide to go I know you will have a great time as long as you are not a bit of a pansy and take some good warm clothes to layer up in Quebec City at Carnival time can easily be - 20 Celcius with windchills and maybe even without, but there is a ton of interesting stuff going on from early morning right through to late night and the old city is easy to walk around and navigate.
I think it also depends on dogs, their training and what type of snow it is.... in the video it looked totally okey and i wouldnt have any problems w/ it. We have a lot of snow over here for like three, four months of the year, so I'm used to watching dogs running and jumping in it on their own. This field and equipment looked pretty neat even with snow, soo..... I think it's not a problem. If I'd run a competition in it - I'm not sure, though.
But I agree that practicing in snow is relative to the condition of snow, dogs and owners. If the temperature is too cold and there is either ice on the ground or equipment it would be a no go. I think in the video people were being safe. Must have been fun to watch though!
Anyhow I do hope you visit Quebec, it is a sweet town and the old part is so awesome to see. It feels very medieval. I've never been to the carnival though, and that is a shame cause it is only 8 hours away from where I live. Going on the to do list (especially if I can get to see agility there also lol)!
If you are brave enough there is an hotel made entirely of ice there. I'm not so sure they would let dogs in though, you might end up with a hole in the floor after a peeing accident .
I would only train on snow if 1) snow was not slippery & was super well packed 2) if the equipment was not slippery. We had a little bit of snow left over from a storm a few days ago, and when training, Nellie would hit the snow, hear her paws hitting against the snow and go for a speed burst! She loves training on snow, but I can't run well in it. :/
