Landing side crosses...is that the same as a tandem turn? I think it is!

Hey--I just learned new agility lingo!

Good luck on the 1st--we have a trial, too!

Still looking for that elusive advanced standard Q...

What is a 'landing side cross'? and what is a 'tandem turn'? :o I've never heard of either of these.

Both of those are the same thing. They are a way to describe performing a rear cross on the flat. So for instance, instead of rear crossing before a jump (while your dog heads to the jump), you would stay on the same side over the jump, and then cross behind your dog as you turn towards the next jump. So, you're crossing on the flat, not at an obstacle.

I found this youtube video that shows it. It's the first I found, so I'm sure there are others/better ones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkALBWIwbjo

It's a great tool for dogs that are extremely handler focused. Bentley will sometimes turn so far into me during a rear cross ("Where are you, mom?!") that he'll incur a refusal at the obstacle I'm crossing. So a tandem turn avoids that possibility.

And here's some info on Bud Houston's blog:

Oh how I wish I would have known this before this trial I just went to! On our second day, in the jumpers course, I did a horrible, horrible FC because I thought Maia would fumble the RC if I did one, and so she dropped a bar. If I knew about this tandem cross I could have done it and she would have been fine. She is a very handler focused dog. That illustration you linked to, is very similar to what the part that I messed up on looked like! Oh well, you live and learn and that is what you guys are for! To help me learn new things! Now to start parcticing these. Thanks for the explination.
