Went out with Cosmo Sat morning to practice outside for our first outdoor trial next weekend, every thing was going great till I ran him at the chute, bamm solid refusal went in the barrel stopped & backed out 3 times. Cosmo has never liked the chute but after lots and lots of work he accepted it and it hasn't been a problem for the last 10 months, I have not practiced it for about 3 weeks because we have been working on other stuff distance work & frame, so here saturday he just totally refuses. I had to go right back to beginner training holding the end of the chute open before he would even consider going through it, then I put it into the wind so the breeze was keeping it up about half way down, we ran it this way about a dozen times OK, then I turned it out of breeze so it totally collapsed, first run he refused again, Oh Crap. Anyway after some perservierance I got him going through using Jackpot rewards after each successful completion, and before quitting for the day I ran him just through the chute a dozen or more times. I am sure glad I set up a full course to practice on on saturday though, I could see him running up to the chute next sat or sunday and just
stopping, I have one more practice day Thurs night before next weekends trail
and you can bet the chute & frame will occupy most of that training session as well. Guess I should blame myself for not keeping it consistantly in the training runs over the last few weeks but I didn't think It was an Issue at all anymore really. Why is it just when you think that everything is going great they always seen to come up with something to keep you off balance, LOL.
At least I caught it before the trial and have some time to work on it before next weekend Whew. On the plus side he does seem to be liking to be outside again after 7 months of indoor arena work, he would just lay out on the grass in the sun soaking it up like a man of leasure as I was working with the pup Saturday during his downtime I didn't crate him, leash him or nothing
even with all the other dogs comming & going he couldnt even be bothered he didn't even move till I called him for his turn, he was just enjoying the nice sunny cool morning too much, Lazy Sod:wink2:.
I am haveing a problem with him stopping at the top of the frame absorbing the view & at the top of the down ramp off the dogwalk for a second or 2 before continuing down it like he has to think do I really want to do this, any suggestions welcomed, the last time he was doing this I had the wife hide under the frame and reach out from under it and pinch his butt
when he stopped at the top that stopped him from stopping for quite some time, but old habbits have returned LOL.

since both Che and Leo were wee puppies I would play various games "hide and seek" types with covering my face and letting them push under my arms for it, covering them with blankets or sheets and jackpoting "find me" once they finally emerge from under the sheet. So neither Che or Leo had any issues with chutes...
But am well familiar with pups keeping me off the balance syndrome:no:
am learning to "embrace holes in my training"

lol, that is adorable

Pretty much now the only thing I know with certainty after having started to train in agility a year ago... is that I know very little and my poor Sheltie is handler impaired but patiently training me! lolllll

the longer I do this the more holes I see that were missing in the beginning, LOL or things I have to go back to. Good thing we have Shelties, and definitely good thing you have handled before... you guys will do great even with acute chuteitis!

It's about the fun and the journey of getting there... lol
