Allergies

I got Sadies blood work back, and she is highly allergic to the following: Sweet Potatoes, Peas, Barley, Pork and Milk. I switched her food over to Natural Balance Potato and Duck LID. Since then her itching has improved greatly, my only concern is; is their enough meat in the NB LID. I was wondering if I should mix the NB with EVO, as it does not have any of the ingredients that she is allergic to also, my only concern is EVO is a very high protein dog food. Any thoughts ?
Thanks,
-Gary

There is rarely enough actual meat in processed foods.

Why not just add other whole foods? Eggs are 100% digestible and contain all the essential amino acids, meat is always good. EVO can go either way with Shelties, many don't do well on it. I'd rather see her get read food than another kibble that may cause a reaction.

Allergic to pork or whatever in kibble is the not the same as allergic to pork raw (granted it's not enhanced pork) so you really don't have to worry about giving her food in it's natural state. Eggs are fabulous -- I do only feed ones from the farmer's market or local as the store bought ones are bleached so be careful with that. My dogs eat 2-3 eggs a week. Do work up slowly as they can cause diarrhea at first if you give them too much.

Evo is owned by Procter and Gamble -- no way I'd ever trust them to feed my pet!!! Does aflatoxin ring a bell?

I totally agree with you! It is hard enough trying to find a safe food without dealing with the amount of protein in it. I suggest buy what works for you and add some fresh proteins... it is good for them and they LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

What kind of protein level are you looking for? Remember, if you're mixing grain-free high protein food, you're not feeding a true 40% or whatever EVO is, since it's being mixed with a lower % food. Acana is lower. I believe Natures' Variety has a limited ingredient, grain free food. There's also Go and Now. It all just depends on what is available in your area and what levels you're looking for.

do you know if she's allergic to the real stuff (as in human food), or stuff that is processed in kibble. Like someone else had said, allergy to stuff in kibble is different than allergy to the real foods.

I'm curious who did the bloodwork and what is it called?? Abby seems to be allergic to Beef just from trial & error.

Info for Abby's Dad

My vet took the blood and sent it to Spectrum Group Labs, and it is called Spot Allergy Report. It was well worth the cost. Sadie is now itch free. :smile2:

I would stick with duck as your meat protein since it works well for allergic dogs. I found feeding a duck-based food helped my epileptic girl enormously. I went through several of the duck-based foods for her before settling on the one made by Go!, which doesn't contain any of the ingredients in your list and is moderate protein at mid-20's. Here's a link if you want more information.
