And now for Agility!

Well I think some people in my club worry that since I am so new, that I might enjoy agility too much and start doing more agility than flyball. It's happened before. Then people end up having to choose between the two and they chose agility.

Don't worry, I'm totally open to competing some day! My intentions are just for fun, but if Missy ends up being really good and we have fun doing it, I don't see why not.
I guess me and Sca are barbarians. Agility looks fun but you sit around a bunch then have a moment and it is done, and so quiet :ick Flyball is like walking into an all day explosion

Spitfire might like agility better though as he could toss his cape on and have everyone admire his moves without any noise or other distractions that need to be attended too :rolleyes2: Then go back to snooze in his kennel.

Well tomorrow is the big day! We're going to be in a class with another Sheltie, a doberman, and a chihuahua. I made some fishy fudge tonight and now Missy won't leave the kitchen. I gave her a few bites as I was cutting it up, so now I think she thinks more is just going to fall off the counter. I'm a little anxious, but I think it will be ok. I'm expecting Missy to sense my anxiety and act like a goofball .

Just have fun, don't worry much about what you may do wrong, focus on what's gonna go right!!!
So glad you get to try it out :D

Well we had our first class last night. We had a good time! I felt a little out of place because even though this was a beginner class, I was the only one without any agility experience. The instructor started talking about contacts and was like, "Does everyone know what contacts are?" and looked at me and was like, "Well you probably don't" and I was a little insulted because although I've never done agility, I do know the basics... which includes contacts lol. But to be honest, I probably wouldn't know much if it wasn't for this forum so I didn't let it bother me too much.

She was very impressed with Missy. We started off with putting them in a stay, and then release. Luckily we do this sort of exercise at home all the time, so Missy already knew how to stay and has a release cue. We just worked on speeding her up. Then we did some basic intro to jumping. Nothing too crazy, just getting them introduced to the jump. Well, we do flyball, Missy knows how to jump (small heights) and isn't apprehensive about it whatsoever. So as the trainer was starting to explain, BOING there she goes over the jump. She saw food, what can I say? So we impressed the trainer with Missy's enthusiasm to do whatever she can to get food! lol. Then we did some heeling.. which I suck.. because Missy refuses to position herself correctly and always wants to be facing me. So the feedback I got was that Missy is great (in general) because she's willing to work (for food). So that made me feel better than her saying, wow, your dog is a hot mess.

Also Missy behaved herself. She didn't bark in her crate, didn't get overly stimulated where she wouldn't listen. She didn't try to go visit with other dogs. Now next class, she might decide she's more comfortable with the environment and be a little bit more.. Missy lol.

Dogs have a tendency to find the position most rewarding for them.
If you stop giving treats in front of you and start giving it at your side, guess which place will be her new favorite?:wink2:
