Anemic puppy

If the gums are pale it's a sure sign of anemia. What I am surprised at is that the pup went home with you. I would think the pup would have been kept for further testing and placed on Iv's to build up his system. The questions that have been mentioned prior by Dani and Barb, need answering as well. Please keep us updated on Kobe and I'd give that breeder a call and possibly get a second oppinion on the pup! My prayers are with you and Kobe.

But the pale gums can be caused by a few things too. I know its a sign of snake bite and some blood related illnesses. So it really depends on what the cause is.

Hi all, i'm a new sheltie own, 8 wk old male "kobe". We just found out from the vet that he is anemic without evidence of worms. The news was devastating. Anyone out there with words of wisdom about what I am to expect while raising this puppy. We still dont' have a diagnosis yet but likely it can't be corrected is what i presume.

thanks for any help!!!

When will you get results?

, poor little Kobe, what a cute name too! Hopefully the Vet will be able to diagnose HOW Kobe became anemic, seems awfully young to have that problem.

Welcome to the forum, you will get a lot of great ideas and suggestions from the wonderful people here!

Most common causes in a pup that young are heavy flea infestation, or hookworms. Both can be treated if caught soon enough. If the red blood cell count is down too long the blood gets so thin that it can cause heart murmurs or bleeding out into the tissues.

Anything that interrupts the bone marrow from producing mature red blood cells can also cause anemia.

Vet should be able to give you a quick answer as to whether the problem is due to parasites vs. a bone marrow/metabolic problem.

if you can, please provide more info about what when and how - what is puppy behavior? is he easily tired, not eating well, sleeps a lot, breathes very fast? how did pup got diagnosed? what other conditions found ? fast heartbeat? heart murmur? was heavy flea infestation at this time of year?
gum coloring may or may not be significant factor, sometimes gum coloring is natural for the dog, what about eyes, are they pink under eyelids? ears inside look pinkish?
did pup ingested any meds? lost blood?
in any case if anemia is suspected, detailed blood work should be done to establish cause if possible... in most cases in the absence of feaseable cause like parasites, toxins, blood loss it is usually genetic/ immune process and prognosis is not good for such young age but those are rare rare cases...
