Another barking issue...

We recently adopted Ross from a family who said they were getting seperated and had to get rid of him, I really think they got rid of him because of his behaviour. He will be 1 on Dec 25th. Ross barks at the phone and the timer on the oven, he also used to bark when I opened the oven door but he has stopped that. When we first got him the would bark and jump up on you and "push" you with both of his paws when the phone rang. I have tried the penny can, but I see a lot of you are having good results with that and may have to try that again. It is like he get very anxious when I go near the stove and as soon as the beeper goes to let me know the oven is ready he goes crazy and barks.

Any other suggestions?

Tks.

Hi! Welcome to the group! You will love it here. Lots of great people and great advice! I have a 2 1/2 year old sheltie that came from a similar situation when she was a year old. She barked at the vaccuum and the dustbuster, the mixer and the ceiling fan. I used the penny can and she has stopped barking at everything except the ceiling fan and mind you it's only when it is on. She is trying to chase it like a bird. I truly think her herding instinct gets the best of her on that and have resigned to the fact that I will never use the ceiling fan again. Keep working with the penny can. He will get it and you will be able to do things with out him barking. Good Luck!

The penny can works great, I'd definitely keep trying that for a while

Do you ever watch the dog whisperer? There was a great episode with a dog who was having anxiety problem, her biggest fear was the sound the oven made when the buttons were pressed, she would just about rip her teeth out trying to get out of the house. Cesar Millan has some great techniques for blocking this type of unwanted behavior

Yes we watch the dog whisperer all the time. I love that show. I try to follow what he does but I must not have his energy!! We will try the penny can again.

Thanks.

Welcome, lots of great stuff around here. I am pretty new to this board also, everyone is so nice. Barking eh? I have one that will bark outside, and one who barks inside, and they both get into trouble, I am the head witch, LOL.

No bark come in, no bark stay. Yes the can works. My diva barks when I loose the phone and put on the beeper to find it. Otherwise she barks to boss me around, and I tell her I am the head witch, NO bark. I let them bark after the squirrels.

We have the monster vac that they bark at. Its getting used to noises also. My boy knows the door bell on the TV, the diva is still getting used to that, she runs to the door and barks, and she is 3.

The dog's probably freaked out by the sounds. I think the concept is really distracting the dog before or just as it gets into the "I must bark at this!!" mode. Don't let it get it to crazy mode. That's how the pennies in a can works and how Cesar's leash pops work (tho' his are attached to a choke chain which I do not condone - I'm not a fan of Cesar's after watching his shows - I find that he's got good concepts but his execution really scares me coz he gives little/no regard to how the dog feels). I watched the one OntarioSheltie mentioned and that one wasn't so bad thankfully.

Don't forget to praise and treat when Ross DOES stop barking once you've shaken the can/popped that leash/clanged those pots (before Ross gets a chance to jump up on you), etc. Don't look at Ross when you do the shaking/popping/clanging too!

My Sheltie Barkley (yes that's his name!) barks at exactly the same things Ross does...phone, oven timer, basically anything and everything. And we've had him since he was nine weeks old so it isn't environmental, it's just in his genes. The can has worked wonders for me, and believe me I tried everything else. My can is filled with gravel from the driveway...I found it makes a slightly different sound than coins do which work better with him.

Interestingly enough, neither of my other two Shelties bark at any of Barkley's triggers. They are all different. The important thing is to be consistent...when I skip using the can for a phone call or two, it recurs. I am not a fan of Cesar Milan either...I find his methods quite negative, but that's just my opnion. I prefer positive training, especially with sensitive Shelties.

There are a number of good barking suggestions on other threads in this forum, in case you haven't been through them all yet. Good luck!

Just putting in my two cents, I am also not a big fan of Cesar Milan. The can worked for me with my last two dogs but didn't work out with Crazy. Hope everything works out ok for you, alot of people on here use the can method and it works great for them
