it's been a while since I've posted here. I have 2 sheltie's a male Trevor aged 5 and a female Penny aged 9. We had been feeding them Rachel Ray's Nutrish food and I've read about it and now see that its garbage. Trevor is barely able to get his hind legs off the ground when he's laid down for a while. Makes me think the food is a major factor. Was wondering if a raw diet would be the best solution or if its too late in the game?

Sorry can't help you with the diet but wow, Trevor is five now!! How time flies.

I'd be getting the back legs checked out, he could have early arthritis or Lymes. Even the crappiest food shouldn't be making him that bad.

diet is everything!

It is NEVER too late to begin to feed healthy...if you go to a RAW diet, you must do it s-l-o-w-l-y because the change is drastic and you have been feeding subpar food. We are what we eat and stuff can be reversed getting the body what it needs, but it is a process, and pets aren't any different. If you haven't-check out dogfoodadvisor.com it gives an unbiased review of dog foods. My previous sheltie had issues with arthritis and I gave her green lipped mussel capsules (swanson vitamins) and that freed up her joints, you can google it. She was about 40 lbs, and I used about half a capsule mixed in with yoghurt in the morning, made a HUGE difference in movement for her...my friend has collies, who are getting older and they use glucosamine for joint issues. There are many natural things that help.

I am trying a new food too. I have a lot of restrictions with the shepherd needing bison and me wanting to keep protein under 30% and a growing puppy too.

Start with DogFoodAdvisor and examine. I use Petflow or Chewy delivery. I don't have access to raw without buying a freezer first because I live far from stores.

Be sure to see a vet. More may be happening besides food.

It's never too late to change to a natural diet, IMHO. Can do nothing but help his system in the long run.

I checked the site. However they do not have Hills Prescription Diet - Metabolic advanced weight solution. My boys are on the wet and dry and doing really well. They love it and they are not over weight!
