Anything and everything to do with show grooming.

grooming a show sheltie

Most of what I have in my tack box is product, but there are some tools that I couldn't do without. Others are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary.

Musts for me are several kinds of brushes: Madan pin brushes, bristle brush (for brushing chalk from legs), a face brush, small slicker for ears, medium slicker, chalk brush.

I have two greyhound combs: one small and one regular size.

Scissors: Thinning shears (check Sally's Beauty Supply for these--good shears and way cheaper than you'd pay for dog ones), 5-inch straight shears, 8-inch straight shears for hocks. Nice to have are a small (4-inch) pair with rounded tip but not necessary.

For home I have my dremmel and extra brushes/spray bottles.

Ann, I've been a pet groomer for 7 years and have recently begun handling classes with my parents sheltie. The want me to be her handler/groomer. I have some of the basics down (my best friend and the person who apprenticed me has been a groomer for over 18 years and shows poodles and she pointed me to this forum), but I was curious what types of product your using or if there are any that you would recommend. :smile2: I am with the original poster on this, any help is so greatly appreciated!!

....i hope i didn't just hijack a thread.....:eek2:

Good grief, poodle grooming for show makes shelties look like a walk in the park! I can't even imagine grooming one to show.

So you're obviously well versed in the tools aspect. In terms of products, I use the Chris Christensen line for show grooming. Spectrum One Shampoo and also conditioner; Substance Builder for volumizing coats. You'll want a good prep cream for chalking ruff and legs...CC makes one but there are several others too.

You'll need chalk in white (loose and stick) and browns for a sable dog, other colors if you have a tri or blue. (I have sables so I'm not familiar with those) My best advice for you is to go to a dog show and watch some Sheltie people groom. There are always vendors there such as Cherrybrook with all the show grooming products you could possibly want at the shows. It's trial and error for what you like and what works with your dog's coat. The best place to shop is at a show where you can get advice from both exhibitors and vendors.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Whatever you have learned from a pet groomer about Shelties, forget it. No scissors should ever touch a Sheltie but for ears and feet. They like to scissor EVERYTHING. Hair should be left as natural as possible, until we pile all kinds of gunk in it of course. :wink2:
