bad haircut!

Hi, I live near a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. I have Duffy, a tricolor male. My other dog is Silkie, a hard-headed border collie/husky mix.

I found this forum while searching for info on sheltie grooming/ haircuts. A visit to a new groomer for undercoat comb-out and 'neatening' of his feathers, etc. resulted in a dog I wouldn't even recognize as a sheltie! They even cut his tail very short. Is this a 'summer cut' or something?

I know it will grow back, and I'm sure he's cooler for the summer, but he just doesn't look like himself.

Any comments?

Sorry to hear it. A groomer should know not to cut a sheltie like that unless the dog is matted beyond help.

Keep your baby out of the sun until there's a small amount of coat to prevent sunburn and never use that groomer again.

No, it is not a summer thing. It is a hack job.

By the way, welcome to SN. Your baby will be just fine.
 
Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the bad haircut...you're right...it will grow back....but until then...keep telling Duffy, he is a pretty boy...he doesn't know he has a bad cut. :smile2:
 
I'm so sorry. I've had a hack job groomer before and it's just devastating. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to make it grow faster. Wish there was, my female was shaved for a hip replacement 4mths ago and it's only about half way grown back.

Just make sure you keep it brushed well. With both undercoat and top coat growing at the same time there can be a tendency to matting, and matting will make him hotter.
 
The poor darling. I can relate to that also, my girl Honey's first and only trip to the groomer for a bit of a tidy up ended with a truly bizarre hack-job! Luckily the dogs don't get upset by it like we do. I'm sure he's still a beautiful boy :smile2:
 
I'm so sorry! I think many of us have dealt at least once with a groomer who had no idea.

One of mine shaved his entire butt...not just the poop chute, and the fur NEVER grew back again properly.

Makes me think that a thread on what to ask a prospective groomer would be appropriate ! That is, to test their experience......

As the owner of a pet store, with a grooming salon, I've seen what my groomer has gone through learning how to groom the various breeds that come into the store. A surprising number of owners want their dogs shaved so it's not surprising that anyone asking for a summer cut would get a shave. Many times, she has said no! to a shave, but if took her awhile to learn that.

Through my dogs she has learned about ears and feathers. Now I trust her 100%. But it took some learning.
 
My instructions are simple trim their pads and leave everything else. It has worked well for my guys whom the groomers love.

Sorry to hear that!! I don't even ever go to a Groomer that is one of the reasons why!! lol
Thank Goodness I found this forum and learned a few things about doing it on my own, hahaha, it's not as awesome as Spruce's breeder's job, but I get by

Thankfully Duffy doesn't spend his time checking his image in a mirror...so he is blissfully unaware he got a bad haircut. And it will grow back. I never use a groomer and do all my own dogs...easier on them and easier on me as I don't have to worry about what they will come home looking like!
