bad puppy!

It is almost always the human's fault ;-) Every single time Spirit has gotten into something she shouldn't, it's because I wasn't watching closely enough.

I was going to mention too, Barley stays in an Ex-pen during the day. He's got lots of room in there to walk around and play, but can't get into anything. I go home at lunch and walk him as well.

But one time I left a plant too close to the pen and it was destroyed by the time I came home! Haha. Thankfully not a poisonous plant.

He gets crated at night and loves his crate. He actually goes in there himself when he's tired and ready for bed. Some nights I've forgotten to close the crate door but he never gets out.

Hi Piper's Mom. I am a believer in crates also...if for no other reason than their safety. I have always been concerned about electrical wires and their chewing. When I'm home in keep an eye on them...but when I'm gone they always go in a crate until I return. I know they are safe when I am away.

Trust me, even when you're home and keeping an eye on them, they can still chew on an electric cord -- happened to us. We were all in the bedroom watching TV. Oberon was under the bed (a favorite place). All of a sudden, my lamp went out, we heard a screech, and he ran into the living room howling. Turns out he had chewed the cord. We, of course, rushed hi to an emergency vet. Luckily, there was no harm done, but still. . .

First off, I just want to say that I am a big believer in crates. I know too many people who don't crate their dogs and they destroy everything from pillows to carpet to chewing wooden chairs.

Second... If you truly don't want to crate him, then do you have more than one bathroom? In my house, there is nothing plugged in and as long as the toilet seat is down and toilet paper is out of doggie reach, what can he really get into there? My bathrooms are pretty much doggie proof. Just a thought.

Otherwise for the bedroom, I would unplug all the cords he can reach while you are gone and put them on the table or dresser or something. Try to get down at his level and see all the things that would be potential disaster. Just like you baby proof a room you need to doggie proof it. It would only take a few minutes for a piece of mind.

I also like the idea of making him work for food. Frozen treats inside of Kongs are great. Also, you might think about getting a deer antler. Those do not break off into pieces so it won’t be a choking hazard for your dog. That will keep him busy for a while.

Bitter Apple the dead cable where he can get it. It worked for puppy Sca who got to laptop power cords :eek2:

Oh and Sca turned out so good that when he does get into something people don't believe me without photo/video proof  So there is hope.

Echo is confined to the kitchen with a doggy door into the back yard when she's left home alone (which isn't often). There aren't any cords or anything else she can reach in there, because all of the outlets in that room are above the countertops. She's never destroyed one single thing, but she's never had free run of the house without supervision. I've always felt like she has plenty of room to roam around between the kitchen and the yard.
Not sure how your kitchen is laid out, but might be less stuff to get into in there than the bedroom.

For the boredom, I stumbled upon this video that is a "playground" in an ex-pen for puppies. I have no idea what the pvc pipe stand with the chew toys hanging is called, but my DH already knows if we have another puppy, one of these is on his honey-do list. I would be careful, though, about the plastic bottles and anything else a puppy may be able to chew small pieces off that could get lodged in his throat, especially while nobody is around.

Also for boredom, I have seen treat dispenser balls that you can put a few pieces of kibble in... it usually takes a while for all the kibble to come out, so rolling the ball around is another way to keep a dog entertained. Here is an example of one I just found online... I have seen others as well. treat ball
