Because even with short hair Baker is a good looking fellow that has the smileWow, poor Baker....How could that groomer be proud of that? I am sorry you had to go through this.

He's still one handsome guy.This is a little long...but I have to share.
I was too angry to speak to them - pretty sure I would have used some language that my mother would be ashamed of. But I did put a rather nasty review on their website. I'll paste the FB message below that I got from the groomer. She said that I wanted a "general trim all over". That is NOT even close to what I said. The receptionist seemed to be taking notes when I told her I wanted only his ears and feet trimmed. And her comment about the typical groom for "everyday Shelties" just blows my mind. I also don't know where she gets the idea that I "show my dogs", unless it was my comment about cancelling the photo shoot I had scheduled for his first birthday. That was just supposed to be a special treat for my little guy.
Kristie, I am so sorry that you are not happy with your groom for Baker. I wish that you had requested to speak with the groomer, me, before leaving him. Miscommunications can very well be made. Our receptionist told me that you wanted his ears trimmed and a general trim all over. It is typical of everyday Shelties to be groomed in the manner that I groomed him. I did not know that you show your dogs or that you did not want trimming of his rough. I always like to talk to new clients when they come to be sure I know what exactly it is they want. I am a good groomer and I really wish that you would have given me a chance to call to talk to you and redeem myself. I know the hair can't be put back on but speaking with me about it would have been appreciated. I take it personally when someone is displeased because I truly love what I do and obviously always aim to please. Baker was amazing. Ok, receptionist got part of it right...general trim does not equal PUPPY CUT. Trim is minimal, just evening up the look, not drastically changing the look. I really would be interested in how a "show cut" in her mind would be.

on what planet or universe-sheltie owners wouldn't want that "typically", because most sheltie owners want their furbabies WITH fur.

Baker is handsome...regardless, but I could see why you might have "learned new words" and exited before you used them,
Sometimes it is best to exit, and start over fresh elsewhere. Because communication lines are crossed there...

Fortunately Baker seems he is fine, really hope his family telling him this the whole time, so he does not get unhappy too.

I really understands you're disappointed, I would definitely also have this.
Fortunately, it is only one imperfections for a shorter time with the lovely Baker underneath and nothing affecting his future life.

All she did was an "I'm sorry but.." That's not an apology. Plus it sounds like she's trying to turn it around on you for not talking to her first. Geez. Stories like this are the reason I do all the grooming. I'm too scared to let somebody else groom Missy. There's a place I used to buy dog food at before I switched to raw, and they do grooming there. I asked if they had any experience with Shelties, and they said yes. All I could think was, "uhuh.. and you probably did it wrong!". I'm just so worried if I say "just ears and feet", somebody is going to get scissor happy! I've only let one person do Missy's feet, and she's somebody I know and trust. Since Missy has pricked ears, I don't really mess with them too much.

From what I can see, in the 2nd picture, the cut looks short, but it looks even. His underscore and legs are cut evenly, so they most likely will be growing out evenly.
Sorry, you had to go through all of this, but truly Baker is an extremely handsome sheltie...haircut or not!

I am very sorry that you had this "surprise" when you picked him up. I think we have all had miscommunications; I once asked for a "bath, no trimming, no clipping, just a bath and dry" for the Cocker, and she came home with her feet trimmed to pencil-points. It was a little odd, but I am quite sure that the groomer was just trying to be helpful and thorough (her trimmed feet certainly didn't soak up as much rainwater!). She grew her mop-feet back within a month, and life went on.
I think it's important to distinguish between a "good grooming" and "appropriate grooming". From what I can see in the picture, it does look like a very good grooming: the cut is even, there aren't any scissor-marks, the dog looks relaxed and happy. He's clean and neat. He hasn't been physically or mentally harmed. I don't doubt that this groomer is good at what she does.
The distinction is really that this style of grooming isn't appropriate for our breed (although again, I am sure that some Sheltie owners would be happy with it). Unfortunately, miscommunication and misunderstandings occur, and what one Sheltie owner thinks is a lovely cut will be devastating to another.
It really is up to us to be absolutely clear about the way we want our dogs groomed. I would suggest bringing in a photo of a dog (doesn't even necessarily have to be your dog) looking exactly the way you want your dog to look. (A photo from Sheltie Talk would do nicely.) Or, as I ended up doing, writing very clearly that all you want is a clean, dry dog with nothing removed!
I can happily guarantee you that his coat will grow back and look lovely, and that Baker will be none the worse. Enjoy his first birthday, and don't let this get you too down.
