Baker says hello!

THAT would be my Melli. "Wanna go outside so I can bark the at the goats, thanks". "No? How bout now?" "Now?" "Now?" Bleh!

Both Toby & Trace were guilty of ringing the bells to go out - just so they could have their treats when they came back in. We could tell them they had to wait. Can't do that so much with a wee one...

Not sure why, but been thinking so much of Trace lately - tears flowing too easily. Maybe it has something to do with the 61 fire Shelties? That situation was/is so sad...

Need to always remember my Trace, but also focus on little monster Baker - he is such a hoot! I have been watching competition videos (BN, Rally & CD) - getting inspired. I skipped CGC and BN with Trace - don't think I'll do that this time around.

We have a doggie door, but it will be a while until the new little one will be big enough to use it. I hope she is a smart one and figures it out on her own. Until then she will be in a crate or a pen and I hope she barks to go out.

Kristie -- Hugs. Remember Trace and mourn for Trace. I got Shay 6 weeks after my bestie Quay left me. While I was ready and needed Shay and adored him, I still had a lot of pain to cope with. I remember every time I went to the vet she would ask how it was going and I would announce I love him but I would give anything for Quay back. It is perfectly okay to miss Trace and think of Trace. When the tears come, tell Toby he knows why you cry and tell little Baker that you are sad because you miss a very special doggy who was called home and who made it possible for Baker to join your family now. They'll understand.

Thank Cara. Not sure why, but every now & then I get overcome with sadness about Trace. I realize now that yesterday's' memories were probably brought on by finally getting around to registering Baker. I did it on line, so I received an e-mail with a copy of the certificate that will be mailed to me. Trace was the only dog I had ever done that with before...

On a happier note, I think little Baker's ears are coming along fairly well. Not sure if I am tipping them enough though. They are pretty hard to work with because they are so tiny.

I will probably jynx everything but I just have to report some great progress in potty training!

Baker had already started going to the door, whimpering, sometimes scratching, sometimes a bark. I was so impressed - even when it seemed like sometimes he was doing it just to go out & play. Yesterday I lowered the bells on the door knob so he can just reach them with his paws when he jumps up & showed him how to "ring the bell". Did that once.

Tonight, when I saw him at the door, looking like he might want to go out, I asked him if he wanted to go outside, told him to ring the bell. He jumped up & BANGED the bells!!! I think he did this 3 times tonight - and every time he actually needed to do some business outside. I am so proud of my little monster!

Of course...he will probably pee & poop all over the house for the next 18 gazillion weeks...

Ok - toenail question now...

When we first brought Baker home, I noticed that even though he has 4 white feet, he had one black nail. I did notice a small spot of brown hair by that toe, so figured that was why.

Tonight, while playing with his toes/nails so he gets used to it, I noticed that over half of them are dark, with white tips! Has anyone else seen this in their dogs? Will they end up being black? I can't imagine what little white feet will look like with black nails...:gaah

I know - if I keep them trimmed they won't be seen, but I'm human...they will get a little long occasionally.
