barking barking barking

I taught mine to bark on command...then its easier to get them to hush on command.
Mine will still bark of course..I want them to...but when I say "thank you..now hush" they stop...well...maybe one more bark for good measure..:yes: I have them come to me too..so its Shhhh...come to me and get ear scritchins..then I can get a hold of the collar if I have to open the door for someone....
Clancy has a huge bark..he sounds like he's ten feet tall...and Abbys bark can peel paint off the walls..:biggrin2:
I know a couple of people who have taught their dogs to get a toy when they feel the urge..like when people come to the door...hard for a dog to bark too loud with a stuffed toy in its mouth..LOL
Other ideas...a water squirt bottle..give a squirt of water in the face when they bark...didn't work with my 2..they liked it and would bark to get the water...
Pennys in a can and shake it to startle them to stop the barking...again...didn't work with mine..just another noise to bark at more...:cool:
I know there are some Shelties that just can not control their freak out mode barking and have been debarked...but I'd sure try everything I could before I went that route.

Maddie was debarked by the breeder and I am glad! I am noise sensitive anyway, and in my opinion she barks a lot! At squirrels, birds, people coming over, sometimes at the kids, too if they startle her, the cats of course, at me when she wants to play, at other dogs which is a problem we are working on. Yesterday I was doing laundry and she was barking at a pile of clothes! The broom, the vacuum, the iron, the sewing machine, the blender, etc.... the list goes on. And the breeder said she wasn't a barker! Ha!
 
All of the Shelties we have had were already debarked when we got them but do rememger it doesn't stop them from barking just lowers the volume. So while it will not be as noticeable when they bark it will still just as annoying if they are a barker because they will continue to bark just not as loud.

Panda is not debarked and but she has a very loud and piercing bark for a little girl. We are working on it but she is such a happy girl the barking comes when she wants to play or when the door bell rings or a door bell rings on tv or the vacuum comes out, when I chase her, play with her what have you but she does not bark all of the time. The spraying with a water bottle did work but now she thinks its a game and she just runs around and around making a game of it.

The shhhhh, quiet, worked for awhile now she thinks its a game too and starts running around barking even more. Bailey barks when the door bell rings, at us when we get home as does Panda as they are very happy to see us. They rarely bark out in the yard though they will when one of the neighbors talks to us over the fence. Panda because she wants to see them Bailey as a warning and a greeting but she will stop when we tell her to.

Oh well we will just keep working on it but I agree if they barked as much as you say yours does we would find it very annoying as well and we would have to work much harder to minimize it.
 
The soda can with pennies in it worked for mine

My pup (6 months old) was an excessive barker. SHE BARKED AT EVERYTHING. Noises, vaccumm, her shasow, cars passing (on our CITY street), dogs outside my dust rag! ANy and everything. It was so bad we could not even watch tv some nights!

Thanks to some of our friends here at SF I was able to get some good ideas. The one that worked the best was the empty soda can with pennies in it. I washed out a can and after it dried I put in 3 pennies and taped it shut. I attached a CLEAR thread to the pull tab on the can and I hid it. When she started barking I non-shilauntly (sprry about spelling) pulled that string and said "QUIET". I made it appear that it was NOT I that pulled that string. I did not want her SCared of me. So i made it look like it was something else. She was instantly quiet. She played but was quiet the rest of evening. The next night 1st sign of barking pulled the string and voila! No more barking. Last week we only used the can every other night and this week only 3 times. Still not perfect but absolutlely better! I don't mind her barking at a noise outside, I just don't want it to go on for 1\2 hour! She used to bark at vaccumm and hair dryer. Today was the first time i could use both with no noise!
 
Exactly my remedy!

It also works with other behavior issues. I used it alot.. and I mean ALOT for Earnhardt because he was a digger. I kept one in close hand,when ever I saw him digging in his kennel or in my shrubs digging, I would shake the dickens out of it. It got his attention.

And I have to say,that silly can still has the same coins in it,and is on the top shelf of my cabinet.I happen to see it the other week,and got it down.He was here in the kitchen,and I will tell ya,he looked at me,and his ears went vrooom to the back of his head!:lol:
 
wow, such good ideas. I am going to try the can idea!!!!! Especially pulling it with string... Got to outsmart the Sheltie or at least attempt it!

Toffee doesn't go into full barking crazy spinning mode, as youngster I have always interrupted him with ah-ha quiet, which he took to mean, ok, ok then just two more grunts, couple huffs and a growl and I'll be done lol
