Barking SOOO much!

you also might try figuring out WHY your pup is barking... it might not be evident right away but they usually have a reason for doing it...
if your pup is noise sensitive, record outside noise and play it during meal time, if your pup barks at mail man- make an effort to greet mail man together and ask him/ her to give your dogs a treats...etc
lots of the time they are bored in the yard and simply need more structured walking time, your attention, game playing or training...
teaching heeling for example will make them tired in just 10-15 minuts...

Haha, the telephone ringing seems to set her off, of course the door bell, the trash man driving up :cool:.

I really do need to work on her obedience skills, heeling, coming, etc.

Clapping my hands then quieting her with my finger seems to help a LITTLE. I also need to look into an obedience class that's appropriate for her, maybe a small size or even a private one on one :wink2:
 
NHSPCA handout

Hi,

Our local SPCA chapter puts its training handouts online in a printer-friendly format, and the one on barking makes a lot of sense. Wish we'd known those things when our two other shelties were still with us, but at the moment we seem to have rescued a Sheltie with NO barking issues. He's well-trained in a lot of behaviors like leash-walking, fetching, and asking for tummy rubs so we think this was trained out of him too.

Might be easier to start at what they are NOT barking at! Much shorter list! :wink2::lol:
 
Very interesting article.

I still think some dogs are wired to bark more then others. My dogs all barks and I can get any of them to stop barking immediately. I truely believe if Ember wasn't here Justice and Diva would not bark much at all. My other 2 dogs Jo and Jazz never barked. Justice never barked until I got Ember.

Ember has none of the traits listed in the article. She is spayed, well socialized, has no separation aniexty(can be alone ), is with me at least 8 hrs day, gets at least 1 hour of exercise any day(many times more), experiences tons of new and novel things. I never praise or reinforce her barking. She rarely does alert or spooky barking(barking at objects or people) but I see her barking as excitement related kinda of like Yippee! Funny thing is she does not barking when doing agility or obedience. Never. I don't think I could stop her from barking so I resort to stopping her when she does.

Ruckus was a horrible barker (still is when i am not outside with him)
I tought him "Enough!"

I had him on a 50 ft leash and went outside with him. he would bark, I would say enough. if he barked again i grab the leash and hurried in the house with him and put him in a down stay for about 20 seconds. and then we went back outside and repeat if needed. after four times he knew what "enough" means. Id say "enough" and he would stop his barking and look at me.

every single time I tell him "enough" he stops barking. but he starts back up in 15 seconds!!!!

so he knows what the command means, he just doesnt realize that i do not want him to be quite for just 15 seconds and start back up! LOL

Actually, there are only a few instances where Meggie barks so much that I cannot even get her attention. Those are when the doorbell rings or when someone has the nerve to walk in front of the house within her view. Normally I can get her to stop with the "quiet" command, but it takes a few times. Nothing I'm terribly proud of at this point. :cry:

Oh the doorbell! Any doorbell he will bark at even the ones on tv and radio and if any one walk past the house or in the house or makes noise outside! He never barks outside or on walk just inside and I can't get him to stop.
