Barking When Playing

I do believe that I stated above "Our family tries to play with her but gets put off by her crazy barking."

I think I'm smart enough to have looked into the traits of the breed before choosing a sheltie. While I know they're typically 'yappy' as a breed I also try not to go out of my way to encourage such behavior and discourage it whenever possible.

At the same time we love Sadie to bits, would never dream of getting rid of her or debarking her and want a second sheltie. Yet another obvious reason to keep barking under control, both for our sanity and that of our neighbours and family.

I do appreciate other people's opinions but not closed minded criticism.
 
It does get to be much when you have three of them and they are all barking at the same time. Sometimes, you just need a break from the barking, not that I don't like it but it is tooooo much!
 
There is a difference between barking and yapping. Shelties are not yappy dogs. Shelties are alert barkers and have a tendency to bark when frustrated or excited. It is not mentally healthy or acceptable for any dog to "yap". Barking, on the other hand, comes along with the breed. But the type of barking needs to be interpreted correctly so that healthy and constructive barking is allowed, but unbalanced barking is remedied.

Think about WHY your dog is barking, and then determine if that state of mind is a healthy one. For example, Gio will bark out of frustration if Romeo gets to the ball before he does. My interpretation, it is in the spirit of play so is acceptable. But, if Gio barked repeatedly for attention, that is resulting from an unhealthy frame of mind, so work should be done to remedy the cause and, in doing so, stop the barking.

Barking itself isn't necessarily a problem, but understand WHY the dog is barking and you may find a real problem that may need to be dealt with.
 
umm Belle lets me know when she sees her reflection in the window :o
all three of my shelties are different pepper barks when she sees someone, skyler barks when anyone tries to leave, and Belle barks when someones here, or leaving or if she sees herself or if she wants her ball! :lol:
 
oh yeah she definitly is the first to notice anything that is different she even barks at my husband when he gets home. she was barking so hard at him the other day she snorted! it was so funny
