Barking!!

Hello All!!

My name is Cheyenne; I'm 2 1/2 years old and my humans keep asking me why I am so barkie about a couple of things.

First, when either mom or dad get in the shower, I bark bark bark!!! I don't know what it is that bothers me; is it the sound of the water? The sound of the shower curtain on the metal rod? Or do I think that the space behind the curtain is eating them?? I don't know what to tell them, but I sure don't like it when they shower!!

Another thing mom and dad ask me is why do I bark when they put a new bag in the trash can!! I just go off the deep end and just bark so loud!! I don't know if it is the sound when the bag is shook out or the movement, but I let them know it bothers me!!

And finally, when either mom or dad has a cold and has to blow their nose or if they cough, I nearly attack!! I bark and growl and carry on like there is an intruder in my house!! I don't know how to explain to them why I do this.

If anyone reading this can help me tell mom and dad what on earth I'm doing, I'd appreciate it!!!

Thanks!!!!!

Hi Cheyenne. My name is Spencer and I’m almost three years old. I want to tell you that I bark at the same things you bark at - and I also bark at the vacuum, the dust mop, the broom - well, you get the picture. Oh, I do one thing a bit different from you. I howl when someone is in the shower. I can teach you to do that, if you’d like. My mom tried to teach me not to bark so much by shaking a can with coins in it, by turning away and ignoring me, by trying to teach me to “bark” on command so she could teach me to “no bark” on command. She also paid a lot of money to have this guy from Bark Busters come to the house to see if he could help her learn how to control the barking. But I managed to keep barking, no matter what she tried. She wants me to mention that there are threads on this Forum about barking and if you do a search, you’ll find them. And she’s sure you’ll get some answers to this posting from actual humans. She also said if there are new things to try, she’ll do them. I don’t know why. I absolutely love the sound of my voice.
By the way, Welcome to the Forum.

Hi there Spencer!! Thanks so much for responding! Mom wasn't sure anyone would actually do that, so it is greatly appreciated!! :smile2: Mom printed your response and gave it to Dad; it made both of them smile really big!! Mom said that she's glad to know that there are others out there who have issues with noises (but she doesn't think that you teaching me to howl is a very good idea; mostly because I have this rooster-crowing sound I do when I'm in the kennel and they get home from work. They often call me Rooster Dog!!) Dad thinks that since you like the sound of your voice so much, maybe that is what is going on with me! I do love barking!! When I go out, I have to announce to the neighborhood that I am outside, walking my dad, and I'm in CHARGE! LOL

Mom doesn't think there is any hope for my stopping my barking habits. Most likely I'll just continue to do that and all the telling me to stop won't work. I say it is just a part of our charm!!

Thanks again, Spencer, for responding! Mom said I can get on here sometimes and talk to you and others, so see you next time!!

Hi Cheyenne

Indy is the barker in the house and every time he starts up, I have to get in the act as well....except I don't really know how to bark - I just sorta woof along with him.

I talked it over with Mom and she agrees with Spencer's mom that you should search the forum because there are already lots of posts on barking.

Even though you might like the sound of your own voice, Mom says that your Mom and Dad DO NOT have to put up with it! So, smarten up, ok! Hint: you'll get more treats if you sit nice and bat your lovely Sheltie eyes up at them. They are real suckers for it! :smile2:

And welcome! It's great to have another Sheltie friend!

Love
Bacca!

Hi CHeyenne

Yes curtains on metal rods are evil and need to be barked at, as does putting in a new garbage bag (esp when mum shakes it open) and any silly sound deserves to be barked at. I DO IT ALL TOO!

But really, my mum's vet (who is also a vet behaviourist) said this is all just me be silly and having fun. Look out for the wagging tail, and is the barking high pitched - that's our play bark. Mum was told to work out what I was allowed to bark at and when, and teach me some restraint for all the other noises - 'course me and restraint dont go too well together!

Hi there Bacca, Indy, and Deska!! WOW!! (or is that BOW WOW!!) So many new friends! Thanks to all of you for responding!

Mom says that she's pretty sure she and Dad will just have to put up with me; they figure that since I am wagging my tail and look really happy while I'm barking, that maybe it IS a game I'm playing. I can tell you that neither of them would dream of shaking cans of coins or any other real type of discipline. I'm generally a very good girl!! :smile2: Can't be trusted off a leash, but that's ok. I walk my speed and let whoever is with me catch up!!

Well, back to nap time. :sleepy: Thanks again to all of you for responding!!!!

Hi, Cheyenne and Welcome--
I'm Layla and I live with my cousin Bits and our adopted sister Annie. We're in the country, so our house needs lots of protecting. We bark at any strange outside noise, any animals we smell and ALL airplanes. We have a doggie door, so we get started barking inside and charge outside, barking at the top of our little Sheltie lungs. I can tell you that not one 747 has landed on our property since we came! Sometimes humans don't understand that we have to warn and protect them from all those dangers out there.

Layla the Therapy Sheltie

Hi Layla! A therapy sheltie? That's awesome!!! I'd be too afraid, though, to do that; I like to stay right by dad, and if he isn't home because he's on a fire call, then I am right by mom!! Unless she's on the ambulance.

So.... no airplanes have landed on your property, huh? That probably means that no trash bags, showers, or kleenex will ever attack and/or hurt mom and dad. I'll have to try and remember that!! Although, I think that I just like to bark, and those activities they do give me a good excuse!!

My step-brother, Goliath, is a poodle/bijon/lapso mix and barks A LOT!! He's a little on the strange side any how... and why does he have such a big name and he's a little dog????

Well, once again it is nap time... :sleepy: Look forward to continued conversations!!

Hi to Bits and Annie!!!

Hi Cheyenne...

My name is Ross and I am an oversized shelte. My mom and dad got me from a family when I was 10 months old. They said I was a good dog...ha ha...My mom and dad soon found out how much I love to bark, but they are trying really hard to get me to stop. I like to bark when they go in the kitchen, especially when the oven door opens and my mom gets out her oven mits. I also like to bark at the door, but they are ok about that because our garage got broken into shortly before they got me. I also like to bark at the phone...a lot, and when my dad gets in the shower!! So we have a lot in common.
My mom and dad hired bark busters and it has helped a bit. Today I am going to Doggie Daycare to help with my socialization. I am really afraid of other dogs when we go on walks so I freak out a little bit.
My mom and dad often say they may get rid of me because of my barking but my human brother would be devastated so I know they won't. I also have 2 cousins Maddie (Golden Doodle) and Jazz (huskie mix) and they like to play a lot, I just like to watch and bark at them..That makes my Grammie really happy because I am like the referee!!

Ross.

Hi there Ross! WOW!! I still can't believe how many of us are out there that have the same habits!! I'm glad, though. It proves to mom and dad that I'm not weird!! Just wired!! LOL I do hope your mom and dad don't get rid of you because of barking. It IS one of our traits!

I know what you mean about being shy around other dogs; the only dog I am not shy with is brother Goliath. My next door neighbors, Ben and Magnum, are HUGE German Shepards and I am REALLY afraid of them!! But, that doesn't stop me from running my yap when dad or mom takes me for walks!! Don't tell them, but I sometimes bark just to make THEM bark! LOL

Keep me posted on how Doggie Day Care goes!! Maybe they know some tricks for us to keep the barking to a minimum!!!
