Best way to give medication

Since I don't want to give a lot of peanut butter, I take the pill and dip it and the tips of my fingers into peanut butter. I hold it up above the head, let them take the pill blob and then still with fingers over the head I let them continue licking my fingers with the peanut butter. The head up licking promotes swallowing and I have never had one spit out yet doing it this way.

Shay will even do this when he has the growler of a tummy and he refuses to eat. This is how I get the probiotics in him to settle down the tummy.

today was extremely successful. I put the pill in some soft cheese and gave her a small piece to begin with. then gave her the piece with the pill in it and....SUCCESS!!! This was much better than forcing it down her throat.

We give Addie her heartworm med in her canned food, or a piece of balogna or meatball. Something smellier and super tastier than the pill. She will usually take it with no problem. The balogna usually takes two pieces, though lol. She requires a "chaser" after the first piece LOL.

Glad you had luck with the cheese!

Mally loves bread. We wrap any medication he needs to take in a little piece of soft bread. He will catch it in mid air!

I have tried all kinds of things to get my shelties to take pills. Buddy is taking 3 pills twice a day for his heart. I swipe peanut butter with my finger & then plop the pills in it. He licks it off my finger with no problem. Jack has to take 1 pill a day & he's trickier. He doesn't like peanut butter so I now use a tiny swipe of cream cheese with the pill in it. First he gets a tiny taste of the plain cream cheese & then the one with the pill. My neighbor now uses the cream cheese for her golden when it's thyroid pill time. Works great.

Shelties are so smart. it's a mixed blessing sometimes but I love them for it.

Watson hates his Trifexis and licks the peanut butter off spitting out the pill. He gets an empty pill pocket followed closely by the pill pockets with the pills in them. He doesn't even realize the meds are in the next ones. If I don't do it that way, he eats the pill pocket and spits out the pill.

So far we have been doing really well with the baby bel cheese. I give her a little piece with no pill and the second one has it. She is so excited about getting two pieces of cheese that she does not notice the pill. I may have to try the pill pocket trick too, but for now I'm just happy that I don't have to shove it down her throat and keep her mouth closed until she swallows it. Ugh!

I take a piece of cheese and split it into four slices. Lucky and Lil' Lady each
take a pill in the morning and at night., I wrap the cheese around the pill
and they are fine with that.

Peanut butter works well with Gus but I find myself covered in it. I've since switched to liverwurst which he eats with no problem.
