Blue Buffalo Takes on Purina

Hopefully something positive will come out of these claims and counter claims...and the public will get more honesty in knowing exactly what is in the dog foods we buy and what the source is for ALL of the ingredients that go into that dog food. So many companies that advertise that their food is "made in the US" actually get some (or most) of their ingredients from China and other countries...and until these other countries tighten up safety laws on what they export this is deeply troubling.

Call me cynical, but I take information from Mercola with a large lump of salt. It's partly because they are local to me and I know a bit too much about Dr. Becker.

That said I find this whole Purina vs Blue Buffalo business highly entertaining :pop

Makes me glad I don't feed either one.

Honestly, I use BB life protection formula, and my dogs like it. I plan to continue to use it. But my first sheltie thrived for 18 years on what was supposed to be a good food when I started her on it in 1992 (Pedigree) but is listed as a 1 star food today. My gut tells me that a dog can tolerate a wide variety of protein types as long as they get a good balance of protein and carbs.

Crazy! Its all about the money. The thing I like about Wellness its a smaller company. Its like human food, they push me into going with smaller companies too. Certain brands of dog or human food I won't touch.

We didn't have choices with food for a time, now we do. It will be interesting how this turns out.

Interesting that you say this. My husband and I were just discussing the other day that our first sheltie was fed on the cheapest store brand food available...there wasn't all the hype about premium foods back then and we were a young couple with 2 small boys, one who is handicapped, and we had major medical expenses so we wouldn't have been able to afford an expensive premium dog food even if available. Yet our "store brand" sheltie was the longest lived and healthiest sheltie we have ever had. I do use premium brands today, but honestly wonder if we aren't all being taken for "a ride" with the dog food industry happily pocketing huge profits.

Yup. My first sheltie ate Pedigree her whole life and lived to be a few months shy of 16. My parents still feed their two dogs Pedigree. I've mentioned switching to a higher quality food, but their response is, "the dogs are healthy on this food, why change?" I just don't think it's worth the argument. I wonder the same thing as you about being taken for a ride, but also the opposite.. have the store brands changed in any way that would make them subpar now? Maybe 10+ years ago (BB has been around since 2002) the store brand foods were ok, but have decreased in quality to increase profit? I'm not sure. I didn't start paying attention to food until I got my cat. She was my first pet, I was the sole provider and decision maker. Since I was buying the food, I got to decide what I was going to feed her. The cats actually eat Blue Buffalo. The dog doesn't, she eats Acana. I can't remember why I don't feed her Blue Buffalo... there probably isn't a reason.
