Blue eyes?

The reason why in AKC blue eyes are limited to blue merles is because of this dog-

Blinx was a tricolour with a blue eye, he was not a merle. He was the grandsire of this dog-

CH Bodachan is behind many of our breeds ROM's. As a result it is possible for blue eyes to show up in non-merle litters, very rare but possible. In aussies there is something called the 'blue eyed tri gene', its considered desirable and is bred for. Its basicly the same gene.

Blinx was bred in the thirties I think, and this gene is still lurking in our breed today, the parent club attempted to breed it out by disallowing it. I personally have never seen it show up, but the oldtimer who told me about it had, and explained thats why blue eyes were not acceptable in AKC. Sables can also express this gene, not just tri's.

Very interesting thank you for sharing.:smile2:

With the merled eye and paler coat color your dog looks like a sable merle to me, do the tips of its ears appear to be silvered? CEA is a disease that has to do with improper forming of the eye, mostly the rear wall of the eye, outside evidence of it could be a coloboma. A coloboma is a portion of the iris missing. This page shows such defects on aussies, who share the same eye problems as shelties, and have a few others that we don't have. I refer to these pages because I've never found such pages for shelties, and all the herding breeds tend to have the same afflictions. The first page shows defects, the second lots of merled eyes and eye color variations, including the blue eyed tri gene.

I found that first website very interesting.Especially towards the end, when I saw the pup that had anopthalmia.
We have a blind himalayen cat, that was also born this way. There are pictures of her here in our albums.

Thank you for the interesting links..I need to finish reading the sites~

My sable sheltie has one half blue eye.... so does that mean he's merle? Also you can see some of the sclera on this eye (there is a gap between the brown). Is that an eye defect (Collie eye anomaly)?

Thst looks just like Deja's chip, just lower than hers...

In following this thread, I have a question for you to clear up for me, please. My Lily is a tri-color, with her right eye blue. The left side of her muzzle is black, while the right side is white, with her blue eye. Is she out of standard, as I read this thread? I have not posted any albums, yet, but her image is in my profile. Please clear this up for me.

I am betting she is a cryptic blue not a tri. She may appear to be a tri but she probably has a couple of blue hairs somewhere on her body. My cryptic blue looks like a tri except she has 1 ear that has a little blue on it. SHe also has 1 blue eye.

just looked quick at her pic...and its hard to say because they are sooo tiny! :) But she looks like a cryptic to me as well
