Bone found in Merrick canned food

I don't know if this happens very often, but this morning when my husband was feeding the dogs, as he dished out the canned food he found a small bone. It is a bit worrisome as it was not just a small fragment. I'm going to post a picture here and also contact Merrick to see what their response it. I'm a little upset that such a premium pricy food would have a bone this size slip through their quality control. If my puppy had been served it she might have choked.

I guess was wrong to be concerned. I just spoke with Merrick and was told that the bones in the food are actually safe for them to eat and expected in that particular food. This post can be removed if needed. I certainly didn't want to cause any problems for Merrick and should have done my research first.

Judy, I am honestly glad you posted this, especially with the follow-up. I would have done the same thing if I gave that to my dog. You just don't expect a BONE to be in a canned dog food like that! I looked on their website, and for that food, it says the following-

A NOTE FROM OUR CHEF: Our slow cooked whole chicken wings offer marinated tender chicken cooked on a softened bone. This special cooking process makes the bone mushy and safe for your dog to enjoy. Feel free to serve whole or to break apart the chicken and soft bones for ease of pet consumption.

I think it's important for this post to remain out here so if anyone else finds themselves in this situation, they can at least read this post and know it's okay!

Just curious, does it say anything on the can about there being a bone in there?

Jess041, There is a note on the can! I should have read it first before I panicked and posted about a bone in the food.

so after talking to Merrick I took out the bone and looked at it. It was quite soft and broke up into pieces. Let me add that Lacey loved it. I think we just need to be aware that bones are in this particular food and make sure to break them up so a little puppy won't choke while eating them.

Your post will help others be prepared for what is in that particular canned food. A bone pictured somewhere on the label with "soft and safe" written across the picture would be more apt to be seen by a consumer than just the note they currently have...even though I know it is our responsibility as consumers to read and know what is in any product we buy. It sounds like these bones are like the bones you find in canned salmon or sardines...very soft, a source of calcium and no danger at all.
