Bragging a bit

Oberon is now a little over 10 weeks old. We live in an apartment, so housebreaking (apartment breaking?) means going for a walk. We take him out first thing in the morning, about 20-25 minutes after eating, after naps, after playtimes (with us or Casanova the cat), and every 2 hours, if it goes that long and none of the above have happened. We've also been bell-training him. I work at home, so it's been pretty easy to stick to this.

I'm pleased to report that he understood the bells the first day we hung them up, and is now probably about 90% housebroken - he seems to understand that he has to wait to go outside, and has very, very few accidents in the house. Of course, when he does his business outside, we make a huge deal about it, give him a treat, etc.

We don't use a crate, but have limited the area he has access to with a baby gate and closed doors. Over the last several days, the only accidents he's had have been when we haven't been able to get him out on time (like when I went to physical therapy or the grocery store and Lee was at work).

We're so proud of our baby!!!

It sounds like the housebreaking is going well for you...good deal. With my last puppy I seriously thought about the "bell system" for house training but decided to stay with my old method...may try with the next furbaby.

Glad your good little puppy is getting it so quickly! Life is good with puppies/dogs that are clean in the house! :smile2:

I thought about the bell system too, but I have an evil cat (Zeus) who will use it as a way to torture us.

I was concerned about this, but so far Casanova has ignored the bells. We have 3 sets - one near the front door, one in the bedroom for those middle of the night times, and one in my office so I can hear (or see) when I'm working.

I highly recommend them; they seem to work really well. Unlike with barking, there's no chance of misinterpreting "I have to go out" with "Look, there's a squirrel" or "Hey, the dogs across the all are barking - what's up".

What a smart little boy you have. I am so glad the housetraining is going so well for both of you, you working from and being home most of the day is probably the biggest help. Congratulations to you both.
