Breakdown in Housetraining again! Why?

OK, I just don't get this behaviour.

Last year around late October Cadbury's housetraining broke down. The first accident occurred when I had to rush out and rescue my brother whose car had broken down. I blamed myself for being gone too long (well 3 hours). Cadbury had done an ENORMOUS puddle in the kitchen.

This was followed by a couple more accidents - one more in the kitchen while I was out and one in the living room when I was with him.

At the time I put it down to a little stress as I was out in the evenings a lot rehearsing for a Christmas play and Cadbury has never been entirely happy with being left alone at night.

I went back to basics with him and after a week things improved and no more accidents. That was late November last year. All 2010 there has been no problem. On one or two occasions Cadbury has been in the house a while and when I have let him out he has done a big wee, so clearly he was holding on OK. I relaxed a little.

Then last Wednesday happened. We went to obedience after three weeks off. It was the the usual routine. Cadbury went wee before we got in the car and again when we got to training.

The only thing that might have stressed him was that his best friend had a nasty run in with a poodle in the car park. It only lasted moments but this poodle had a hold on the other dog. Whether this upset Cadbury I don't know.

We started training in the outside area and quite quickly Cadbury went wee again - this is actually quite usual as there are lots of smells in that area. We were outside for the majority of the lesson until the rain hit us and we all dashed inside the main hall. Lesson continued as normal.

At one point a lady came to pick up her friend and walked into the hall causing Cadbury to bark, but then he wagged his tail and wanted to make friends.

It was shortly after that things went wrong. We were just stood listening to my trainer and I heard this trickling noise. I looked down and Cadbury was weeing on the floor! He was not squatting or lifting his leg, he seemed almost oblivious to it, though probably he wasn't.

I quickly ran for the door and took him to the grass in the carpark where he finished off.

I was completely baffled as he has never done that before in the hall, in fact one other time when he got caught short he made a beeline for the door so he could get out.

Anyway, I thought perhaps the earlier incident had stressed him and caused it.

That brings us to yesterday. Cadbury went into the living room and was just standing there and started to wee. I said 'Oi!' and he ran to the back door and asked to be let out. As soon as he was outside he continued to wee.

Now this is the exact same time of year as last year - what the heck is going on?

We had fireworks going off on Friday and Saturday but Cadbury slept through them, so I can't blame that. I'm not rehearsing like last year and we haven't changed routine. So why is this happening?

Can anyone shed some light on this because I am flummoxed!

Sophie, I really can't speak to the seasonal pattern that you're noticing, but this one sentence really makes me think it might be a UTI or something physical. When Lexi had her really bad infection, she would pee and really not even realize she was going (until it was too late).

It might not hurt to take a urine sample in just to rule it out.

I think I might just try that to rule out anything physical. Of course, Cadbury appears oblivious a lot of the time when he is doing stuff!

But me and mum discussed it and we both agree that it seemed as though he was unaware of what he was doing.

But if it was a UTI would he be fine Thursday, Friday, Saturday before his second accident on Sunday?

It does sound physical. If it was behavioural you should be seeing other symptoms of stress, like being off his food or lethargic.

Is there any consistency in places you visited on the previous day? recently Deska has had diarrhea on and off and the vet worked out it is an allergic response. Also his environment could cause a relapse in a uti. In humans utis can clear up by themselves and then reoccur because of a change that upsets our body flora just when its fighting the infectious bacteria. So stress, lack of sleep, diet can reinflame a previous infection.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any place he might have been on both occasions before the problem.

My only other thought as I lay in bed last night was that when Cadbury was a pup he was spooked while going to the toilet outside by a clap of thunder. He bolted into the house and it took a couple of hours before I could persuade him it was safe to go out again.

Now over the last week there has been a lot of bangs because of fireworks night on Friday. Plus at training on Wednesday there was a shoot going on somewhere nearby and one bang made Cadbury jump. Saturday night there were a LOT of big bangs, it was like being in the Blitz!

So it occurred to me is there a connection between 'scary bangs - I can't go outside to toilet?'
