Brooke gave me such a scare!

I have been counting my lucky stars that Brooke (who just turned 13) is as healthy and feisty as she is. DH and I just got back Wed from a vacation, and she seemed absolutely fine. I was with her all day the next day, doing laundry and chores around the house; no problems. Then that night, after our usual 2 mile walk and after she ate her dinner, she just seemed off. I picked her up and put her on the couch, and she stood there, facing the corner, and not flopping down as usual. I tried to get her attention and it was like she had just checked out. No response. So I lifted her onto the floor and called her - nothing - blank stare like she couldn't even see me.

S**T!! I waved my hand in front of her face, called her, and she slowly responded. Got some treats out to see if that would get any response, and I waved it in front of her face. She could smell it, but instead of reaching for the treat, she pointed her nose straight down. She finally ate it. While my hubby called our retired vet (he's a friend) I did the neuro reflex test with her feet - folding them under to see if she would snap them back into place, she did it but slowly. Took her temp, a bit low at 99.6. Listened to her heart with my stethoscope, rate and rhythm seemed OK. (I'm nurse.) I'm thinking stroke at this point. Vet called, told him everything, and he thought TIA or "geriatric seizure". She seemed to slowly come back during this time - could see me and hear me. Tried to bark but it seemed weak.

Decided not to rush to emergency, but keep an eye on her. This was close to bed time. Took her outside to see if she would potty and she did - pausing at the closed door, so she could see that OK. Then put her on the bed. Well, she slept GREAT, me, not so much! I was awake about every 10 minutes it felt like to check her. By next morning she was back to normal.

Needless to say it was so stressful, and I'd sure like to know what happened. The dogs all got their flea meds that morning, but it was at least 12 hours after that, and the others were fine. So weird. Anyone else have something like this happen to an older pup?

Oh Sharon, that is quite a scare!

So glad Brooke is OK now and there is not a repeat occurrence.

I sure hope for your sake and hers that it never happens again.

That is scary, Sharon! I'm so glad Brooke came out of it on her own. From your description, it wasn't a seizure and you would know with your training. But it does sound like something in the same family...a TIA perhaps, as you said. Pixie would have spells like this in her last year but she would also temble when she had them. My vet did prescribe a medication for her which seemed to help. It's something newer that they use for seizures but it might be worth looking into. Of course I can't recall the name offhand but if you want it, let me know and I'll pull it from Pixie's records.

Give Brooke an extra pat and cuddle from us, and get some rest!

poor girl was probably super confused! I do worry about such episodes as Gavin is 13. Logically speaking, I am home and awake less than 1/3 the day, so the probability of me being home to witness such an event is less than 50%. He could have already had several and as long as he recovered I wouldn't know it :(

extra snuggles all around!

So this morning she pounced around playing with Faith and even took her down once! Back to her feisty self. And I was SO HAPPY to see it. I will be watching her closely for a while but I think all is well, and I'm hoping it was just a one-off. Hubby took them to a park for some running around and stick chasing, and she did great, running around and barking. Just wish I knew what happened. She goes in for her dental cleaning next month and I will let my vet know about the episode.

Thanks for the concern and support!

Oh Sharon, I'm sorry, but glad Brooke is back to normal. This is very VERY similar to what Bailey has gone through. Bailey has had about 4 of them since 2015. When I came home from work, she was spacey and her rear legs were weak. She did eat dinner, but much slower than usual. I took her to straight to vet where they did the feet folding test and she was slow to fix one of her rear paws. They initially told me IVDD and said immediate crate rest, no more jumping. I took her to a neurologist and they did a full MRI of her spine. Thankfully, it was completely normal. I took her to another neurologist a few months later and he said she looked great. They think it was mini strokes. They said they could do a brain MRI, but it probably won't show anything and there's nothing you can do.

The first time it happened, it took Bailey a few days to recover. We thought it was a muscle injury. The second time, only a few hours. I also noticed a few triggers: the heat, overdoing an activity like walks, running etc. and lesser quality food. The first one happened a few weeks after I switched her food. When It happens, I just keep her as comfortable as possible. It really breaks my heart.

Give Brooke a hug and a kiss for me!

How old is Bailey? I know Gavin really struggles with any exercise in the heat at 13

She 9 now, so she was only 6 when this started. I just do my best to manage it while still allowing her to be a normal crazy sheltie. She still gets two walks day and training classes once a week. I just don't overdue the exercising or training and no exercising or training when it is hot. No flea or tick chemicals. I use cider oil spray every other day. She also eats freeze-dried raw for her meals.

Wow. So glad she’s okay. Lexi has a similar episode a few years ago. She just wasn’t right for a bit, then fell off the bed and struggled to “see” me. I rushed her to the vet and by the time we got there she seemed much better. Tests found nothing. Hope Brooke doesn’t have any more episodes!

Gavin has been through so much, I just want him to be happy for the time he has left.
But I know I have moments of confusion in the middle of the night and they aren't TIA/stroke.
So maybe we are just hyper vigilant with out pups
