Building Weaves

Sca park is coming together and I think I am making a weave next.

So a couple of questions for the experts:
1) I used 3/4 PVC for jumps but NADAC says the base cannot be over 1/2. I assume 1/2 PVC is used? I can see pole flex is a good thing.

2) I am thinking of aiming at a 24" weave as it seems everyone but USDAA has gone that way. Is there any advantage to training at slightly smaller dimensions?

Thanks

This is the only part I can answer :smile2: Even USDAA is slowly moving this way. Acceptable weaves are now anywhere from 22" to 24", with most clubs having already transitioned to the 24".

Given the majority of trials are now useing 24" weaves, I would build 24", otherwise you may find the need to build a new set down the road.
I think it's best to train on what you're going to be trialing on.

I used 1/2 inch for mine, but I think it is too flexable, if I had to do it over again I would go with 3/4 inch myself. after all for practice weaves the dog really won't know the differance with the base being 3/4 over 1/2 " and it will be a lot more Robust, especially with the bordersheltie. and we only use 24" here so that wasn't an issue.

So I went with 3/4 since I remembered that my wires were for 3/4 :o

Here is my cut list
12 @ 40”; 4@ 18”; 8 @ 10”; 7 @ 22”
7x10' 3/4 pipe; 2 Elbows; 14 Tees; 16 Caps

To minimize waste the following cut length per stick will waste 4" on stick 6 and leave 50" on stick 7:
40 40 40
40 40 40
40 40 40
40 40 40
18 22 18 22 18 22
18 22 22 10 22 22
10 10 10 10 10 10 10

That give centers at about 23.5" though the first one needs to be a bit longer since it is under 23 (so you could cut the 18" on stick 6 at 19").

Cost at Lowes for all the sticks, joints and a can of glue is about $30. That does not include a cutter which if you want to make stuff I recommend a good one (I think I paid about 15-20 for mine). The cutter is faster than a hack saw and you get nicer cuts.

Training wires are expensive. I got 2 sets so I can do 12 poles Initially I don't plan on gluing anything so I can lean poles out at a V but later I will since it will make things more stable (leaving enough unglued so I can break it down for travel and storage)

Hope this is useful to someone.

NOTE: The drawing shows 11" and I used 10" as above
