Bump on Bellybutton???

When we brought Ida home in November, I noticed a small bump where her bellybutton should be. It was soft and didn't really feel abnormal, even though I'd never seen this before. It concerned me at first and I had intended to ask my vet about it when I took her in for puppy shots but always forgot. It never really had me worried.
Now it's not so small and soft, but is about 1" long and 1/2" tall (or more) and it feels hard. The skin itself is pretty much normal but it feels like there's somthing under it. It may just be how her bellbutton is. But why would it get bigger and harder over time:confused2:?
I wish I could show you some pictures. I hope my discription was good eough.

I would have your vet take a look at it, especially if it's getting bigger. My Pixie had a hernia when she was about 3 that required surgery to fix. I don't know if what you're describing could be something like that, but I'd have the vet check it. Good luck and keep us posted!

Probably a umbilical hernia. My Collie has one, it's about the size of a dime and pokes out a little.

Wow! Never would have thought that! I have one too, my bellybutton dosn't stick out though. Is it inherited in dogs? My grandpa, dad, brother, and some uncials and aunts were born with it, and so was I. If she has what I have maybe I could contact her breeders to see what they did for there herniated dogs. All I know about the surgery is it's expensive, on humans anyway. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it except for if I press on it.

I think it has to do with how the umbilical cord is handled right after birth. I find that Collies are much rougher on the cords than Shelties, so way more Collies have umbilical hernias than Shelties. My vet offered to fix it when she was spayed.

How much was s/he going to charge? I may look into that when spaying Ida. I know all prices are different but I'd like to get a general idea.

I have no idea, I declined because they couldn't quote the price over the phone. And my Collie is mutant/mutant, so I didn't want her under any longer than necessary. She is 7 now, and it's not changed since she was a puppy.

Umbical hernias can be genetic or as a result of rough handling of the cord when they are born either by mom or someone helping with the whelping. If it is only one likely handling if there are multiple puppies with in or the mom or dad had one it is genetic.
